Gap closing almost 200 stores...

and I am bummed. The reports indicate that people find Gap merchandise boring and too neutral. I laughed because that is exactly why I love them so much ! I actually found them to fit the recent Eurochic description.

Anyone else care ?

I saw that article earlier today and was sad too. It also said they were going to open more stores in China I believe. But I like them here!

Same thing that Esprit is doing. I really like The Gap- I hope they don't close the closest one to me (which is an hour away)- I will never get there if they do.

Chewy, Esprit ! We haven't had one around here in 10 years or more. I didn't realize they still had stores.

Yeah, I was sorry to lose the Esprit store near me. I found my great velvet blazer there last year, and I thought they usually did a good job of carrying basics (and nice colors!) but with some interesting pieces as well. One of my favorite sweaters -- a blue argyle -- is from there. I've had it for years and it still looks great.

Gap has been a bit off my radar the last few years. Other than a pair of jeans last winter, I can't remember what else I've found there in quite some time.

Oh noooo! I love the Gap for jeans and key classic pieces. I wonder if this will affect their online business at all...? That said, I'm really surprised - I thought the Gap was very successful and kicking all kinds of butt retail-wise. Huh. Perhaps they need to have more "new style" and bold pieces to get people in there shopping more regularly...?

I think their sister company old navy is doing better, cheaper basics. I have never had luck with Gap pants, they don't seem to fit my curvy tush, but I like their tops

I am really not surprised, they have had terrible financial and market woes ever since the dude who ran it moved to J Crew. They had so many stores in NYC they practically made a pentagram over the city.

Angela, Old Navy isn't doing so well around where I live. They have closed a few stores in malls also.

IC - is that where the guy went ? JCrew also has Jenna Lyons. The pentagram comment both made me laugh AND scared me...spooky.

There has been news recently that the "middle" stores, like Gap, are having a really hard time. While stores on opposite ends like Tiffany's and the Dollar Store are growing. Very interesting to me. I sure hope that the Gap stays around somehow.

Well no love lost here.... they don't carry my size in store anyway so it is no loss for me.

I am not surprised. Their denim selection has improved over the last year or so but I haven't seen a top or a dress that I liked in ages. I am not that keen on BR either but haven't completely given up hope.

Gap stuff has gotten *very* flimsy recently, and quite casual. If I want casual I'll just go to ON (or honestly, Target or the thrift store) and save the $. I go from Gap to BR and back a lot but recently it's been almost all BR. Dunno why Gap is struggling so much more since presumably they share design staff and fabrication sourcing.

I don't remember the last time I walked in the Gap store. I know it gets mentioned here quite frequently, but I never really bonded with their cottons that don't contain any elastane (that was my major, major annoyance with them) and for solid basics I always thought Esprit is much better.

I love their jeans but would never buy anything else from them.

I have a long sleeved Gap top from 1992 or 1993 that I *still* wear because it won't give up the ghost and I can't find a replacement piece.

Gap clothing used to mean a certain level of quality. If they would just start making their tops the way they did in the "good old days", even if they raised prices, I'd still be shopping there.

I second Sylvie's thoughts, but I think a number of the mid-range stores are suffering from a quality dive (BR, Eddie Bauer and J Crew as well as Gap). I have a couple of Eddie Bauer button downs from 1998 that are fantastic. . .

Oh a whole i do find Gap pretty boring and neutral...usually not my style. Yet i have those patch jeans and they are from Gap and i love them to death.

I think, like someone said above, the real problem is the price point they're starting things off at for the style and sometimes quality they carry. Just my opinion.
