Wow! They are cool looking. You could probably batik an existing pair of black or white ones to try to approximate the look. Batiking might be more "precise" than tie-dying.
I'm with Meredith, wax-resist plus gentle bleach 'painted' on with an absorbent underlayer could be the way forward. Just make sure to use wax that will come off without a struggle! (Candle wax can be used, then freeze to remove.)
I think this has the potential to look really cheesy if it looks like a bad tie dye job. But then you have the pride of saying that you made something! I am with Denise - if these are really speaking to you, I would spend the money on the good design and skilled workmanship that went into them. They are right up your style alley. I can see them worn under the blue or purple eliza j dress.
