Frye Rory Scrunch Boots in 2019

I have kept mine even though my high instep stopped fitting them on my larger left foot with body changes over the years. I couldn’t quite bear to give them up.

Well, I tried them on today - and wow, I can get the tricky foot in! The soft leather stretches, but without being able to get my foot into the structured part years ago that wasn’t possible.

So how might I style these in a way that looks current? (They probably won’t fit with skinny jeans tucked in.)

On me, the scrunch is very low. My legs have quite wide calves so I cannot pull them up.

I see no problem still wearing them with skinny jeans, the way you wore them in the old picture looks perfect.
But if you still want new ideas I know other members can suggest something for you.

I cannot fit skinny jeans into the boots anymore. My body is a great deal larger than in 2010, especially my calves after running this year. That’s not changing.

Kari, I've been seeing scrunchy boots reappearing this year with midi skirts ... Might that work for you?

Kari...i'm wondering what these would look like with cropped pants, especially wide legs...in my mind the boots would like work like the boots shown in the first 2 photos. depending on the skirts lenght they could also work with a skirt like #3.

Wow, those old links are a blast from the past — they date back to before I found YLF but I remember and miss a lot of the people who commented on those posts!

I still have my old tall Frye scrunch-able boots but they are taupe, which doesn’t seem to go with anything in my wardrobe anymore, so I’ve set them aside to try dyeing them charcoal perhaps. They still fit and look good and are comfortable. I don’t scrunch them down my leg, but they do sort of slouch a bit. I would still wear them with skinnies in winter even though that’s not trendy anymore, but I’m following along for styling ideas. I never seem to wear skirts or dresses in winter but I would try the boots that way if the mood hit me.

I pulled mine out the other day too. I've been seeing scrunchy boots resurfacing. Mine are quite baggy in the calf so for me they worked best over skinnies. I like Kkards idea about trying them with the cropped pants--that looks very current to my eye. I'd love the get mine into rotation. Fryes are timeless!

@Kari, if you aren’t able to tuck skinnies in why not wear bootcut or flare jeans over the boots, that would look great and still be in style.

Can I piggyback on this by asking if these boots are too clunky to wear with a midi? These are my taupe Fryes that I’m thinking of dyeing black or dark grey, and they’re roomy through the calf, not fitted at all. I know it’s probably easier to assess if I had a pic of me wearing them, but that’s not possible at the moment. Thoughts?

I love those. t's worth a try. You have some height so it may work. I find that my Veronicas that are loose in the calf only work with structure--knee length skirts or with skinnies. Too roomy to look flattering. I could see yours with a high low skirt/dress. Are you tired of them with skinnies? Can you wear them with boot cuts?

I would wear them with skinnies if I could, but I seriously don’t think anything other than my leg will fit. My calves are chunkier than they were 10 years ago, and even then they were quite wide.

Here’s what I’ll try.
• Black leggings (should fit but texture of leggings plus softer inner lining of boots may make it hard to get on.)
• Hose is a no brainer
• I’ll give midis a shot
• Cropped black crepe culottes, possibly with textured hose
• Zippered skinnies and zippered ponte pants that kind of open up like cropped slight bootlegs
• And maybe even with my asymmetrical hem Geneva dresses, because why not? It’s worth a shot. (I’ve seen folks rock cropped cowboy boots with that dress.)

I don’t have any flares or wide leg pants and don’t plan to buy any at the moment.

And definitely will revisit next summer/late spring - both RE: styling as well as to see if they fit in warm weather when my feet are more swollen. I ran yesterday which makes the fitting my bigger left foot all the more curious and promising.

I love the idea of midi skirts and dresses with these. I've been wondering the same about my slouchy Frye Veronicas, which I usually wear with shorter, more fitted/structured skirts and dresses like kellygirl describes. If I ever add a winter-weight midi skirt, I'd be tempted to try wearing it with slouchy boots. There's a certain Diane Keaton-esque appeal to that look.

Ok. So I’m going to have to poke around in my closet (much as I love the boots, I’m not going to buy a dress right now to go with them! *grin*) One thing I note is a lot of the midis are pretty bohemian and I’m not at all. Here are some possibilities.
