Front vs. side

So often I will love an item from the front view. Then I turn to the side and EEK - eyes scorched by the awfulness. I've only recently learned to consider every angle and am finding very few items that work from all angles.

Do you ever feel like your front, side and back views belong to three different people with radically different clothing needs?

I had this experience with a GORGEOUS dress that I got on major sale...from the front it looked great I turned to the side and realised that the dress had been made for someone with a *ahem* much fuller bust that I- it was poofing out and looked horrible, I was SO disappointed

Yup. Big time. There are lots of outfits I think look nice from the front, but then I catch a glimpse of the back, and it isn't pretty.

The long boyfriend cardis are a perfect example of this problem for me - long and lean from the front, 7 months pregnant from the side...

What usually gets me is the front vs. *rear* views
Fairly elongated in the front - wide load in the rear!

I usually have issues with the back view rather than side - kind of "I cannot believe these bum / thighs look so huge - something should be wrong with the mirror!":-)

I have issues from the side too. I can look really slim from the front but my stomach always sticks out. I avoid overly tight things there but our silhouettes are often in movement and others are not as critical as we are of ourselves so they are not going to be measuring us from every angle. If you know what I mean, most people just get a holistic view of you. Or is that just my optimistic lazy view of things?

I have this happen often with tops and how tight they are sometimes they look great on the front but the side and back show it curving around my bum, ugh!

Sally, I agree most people don't care and I certainly don't judge other women by their weight or body shape! But I recently saw a photo of myself from a family event and was shocked to see how bad an outfit I thought was flattering really looked from the side - I felt like I had turned into one of my uncles with a beer gut! Which could easily have been avoided had I just worn a more flattering cut of shirt.

Ha ha! This is too funny. I totally get what you are saying. This happens a lot for me with "fashion" bras, they look all vuluptuous & yummy from the front but have weird angles from the side.

Hmmm those back and side mirrors in changing rooms come in handy then. I often dont like my side profile so I always check it out when trying on new outfits. I"ve even started taking photos of the side profile.
Reminds me of a section in Trinny and Suzzannah's book where it shows you how to take a good photo and pose for the camera which is what a lot of celebrities have been trained to do.

True. We are three dimensional beings for sure.

In the same breath though, I'd like to caution you with this. There is the tendency to become over critical with back views and side views. I spend a good portion of my time convincing clients that the back view in something looks completely acceptable. No need to be overly hard on yourselves. My two cents
