We took my grandson to the Lego store in the mall tonight. While he and my husband were occupied I tried on fringe jackets. The first one is leather and is from BR. I liked the idea of it. It is expensive and the quality is not there. The lining was longer than the sleeves and showed in the back too.
The second one is from Express. I liked it. There is not a overload of fringe on it and the color is great. Here is the question though. Is this something a 60+ woman should even wear?
What do you think of the Express jacket? Should I keep looking or give up the idea all together.

I have mixed feelings about this. I like the black one better, although I don't think you should get it if the quality isn't there. I think as you get older if you do something trendy absolutely the quality must be there.

Sorry to say this, but the brown one looks a bit Davy Crockett to me. It's not age, Debbie, but it just doesn't seem like you to me.

I skipped the fringe trend the first time around, and except for fringe around the bottom of a skirt I intend to skip it now. (I will never fit into the fringe bottomed dress I've been eyeing.)

Oh boy, trips to the Lego store with grandkids. You deserve to buy something special for yourself. Not that I hate the Lego store, but in my experience it takes so long for the boys to decide which ones they want.

Ever since 1962 I've wanted a black dress with rows of fringe. Maybe this will be the year . . . sigh.

Debbie, I've also been wondering if I should trot out my old fringe jacket as a midlife woman. I actually prefer the look of the BR jacket on you over the Express one. I like the fact that the fringe on the first seems to go down the sleeves, also think the black smooth leather looks a bit more distinctive. its a shame the quality isn't there. Maybe keep looking?

Seeing you in the black makes me believe that fringe is a look you can totally carry as long as it's the right jacket. Something about the limited placement but longer fringe in the second jacket just doesn't look right to me, but that could just be the photos. Fringe looks best in motion: hard to achieve with a selfie!

Ms. Maven thank-you. Davy Crockett and Texas don't mix. I will definitely have to think about that aspect.
My grandson and grandpa had a great time! I loved having a few minutes to walk around by myself.

Aliona-I was really disappointed in the quality of the BR jacket. I do see your point though. I am going to look around some more and just see. I wouldn't be able to wear this for awhile anyway so I have time.

I think you should go for something more sophisticated. This is just one opinion, but pulling off fringed jackets if you're over 40 and not in the rodeo can be tricky!

Much prefer the BR one, but not if the quality isn't there for the price. I'm sure that more jackets will trickle down as the season gets going.

Yes, I hear you on being disappointed in BR quality, it seems so hit or miss these days. Maybe look for something similar at another store: I think the colour, smooth leather and moto styling are what save the black jacket from wandering into wild frontier territory.

Now I know why I always feel a bit costumey in mine--it's very Davy Crockett

I have mixed feelings but it's likely my eye hasn't adjusted to this trend yet. It looks very Western to me, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Of these two I prefer the Express jacket, looks softer to me.

Oh that's too bad. The BR one looks really good, but it's a waste of money if the quality's not there. The Express one has a bulkier fit through the middle, and I can't say I'm fond of the fringe right across the chest.
I agree with Aida, there will be more and better options. Next!

Haven't read any of the comments yet but here's what I think- you can definitely carry off the fringe!
I personally like the look, feel and color of the black jacket on you, but what I like about the brown is that the fringe is a little minimal, however I do like it more in the laSt picture where you're wearing it open ☺

You definitely can wear the trend.

I prefer the black (don't love the fit of the brown, too understated). But, Debbie, if the leather feels crummy, will you actually wear it?

If the quality isn't there...I'd let it go. Not sure if I love the look, anyway. If you want to do fringe,why don't you try a handbag? Not as much of an investment.

Debbie, I'm going to encourage you to keep looking--probably because my crush on last season's St. Laurent black fringed suede jacket (still available, still gorgeous, still $5,000) makes me sympathetic to your quest for a reasonably priced version. I think this is a case where quality and taste level of design are more important than the mere category "fringed jacket" for those of us over 60. There is a nice, grown-up-looking one offered by Anthropologie in dark brown, but if you just want to play with the look, you might check out some of the vintage offerings on Etsy and Ebay: they are generally very inexpensive, won't look like everyone else's, and might even suit you better--worth a look. I ended up buying a vintage (non-fringed) black suede jacket, added a new pair of black suede chunky-heeled booties, and am keeping an eye out for a discreetly fringed bag to satisfy my fringe craving. Curious to hear what you decide to do!

Of course you can wear fringe. I prefer the ones Angie posted. I have my fringe jacket from 1969. I also have one that my brother bought me from a vintage store 5 years ago. My philosophy is that if you loved it the first time then you deserve to love it over and over again.

Dear Debbie, if you can't wear fringe in Texas, I don't know where you can wear it I have been looking for the right fringed bag but haven't found it yet. I did pick up a fringe necklace as a nod to the trend. You need to find a jacket that you love.

I think a woman over 60 is THE woman to wear fringe. Unfortunately, I prefer the black to the brown...

Debbie, you're not too old for fringe. I do like the style of the BR jacket on you better than the Express one. Something about the straight-across fringe just doesn't seem as sophisticated as your style. So I would keep an eye out for more styles to try on. Those jackets Angie picked are gorgeous--I like those warm brown tones for you.

Angie the love the ones you suggested and I am definitely going to try them. I have decided I want one the color you posted. I need another black leather jacket like I need a hole in my head. I have two and my climate is usually too warm for them to get worn that much.
