We're doing ok. Dunrobin....where the first tornado first touched down is about 10 minutes up the road from my house so that's pretty disconcerting. I think it's something like 60 homes destroyed there. That one then crossed the Ottawa River and touched down again in Gatineau. The second one came 90 minutes later and hit south Ottawa. As Carla said, that one destroyed a major transformer which connects a lot of Ottawa to the provincial power grid.....The power to my home comes from that one. It's going to take weeks to rebuild it but they've "McGyvered" it to re-route power for now. We were about 24 hours without power which is better than many. We connected our refrigerator to the neighbour's generator.....that felt like a luxury.
Hydro Ottawa said that Friday night about 400,000 homes and businesses were without power. As of Sunday morning it was about 180,000. They got a lot done over night.....it's down to about 3,500 this morning.
All Federal offices (this is a government town) and schools are closed today.
On Saturday we went to a large mall that had power. Every power outlet in that place had people sitting on the floor around it charging their devices....in stores, up and down the mall corridors. It was a strange sight.
September tornadoes are extremely rare in this area. This was the first EF3 tornado to hit Canada in September in 120 years.
