What do I call this style?

So Fabbers, I haven't posted much this last month. But I have continued to read up on styles, search Pinterest and read YLF all that I can.

Sometimes I feel a bit hazy about what my defined style is . Maybe I'm overanalyzing it.

Still my heart lept a giant leap of joy when I found this Anthropologie catalog during a recent sort-through of ly belongings. Apparently I've saved it for 3 years and still love the outfits and styles as much today I did then. I would wear every single outfit in the catalog without question.

I don't know what to call this style. It's glamorous; a bit ladylike without being frowzy or too classic. I love the pompadour hair and makeup. It's not very casual or natural. I think I get worried I'm overdressing. And yet that feels right to me so much of the time. The ony way I seem to feel more at home in casual clothes is when it's simple and drapey--say, an oversized blouse or sweater paired with jeans and flats.

What are your thoughts everyone? Sometimes I worry I am dressing for a fantasy. And yet these are clothes I feel comfortable in and adore. I feel like a slob and unattractive if I'm very casual and underdressed. (Does that make me insecure??)

Anyone else like this style or feel this way about clothes?

Do you mean the whole of Anthropologie's style? Or the one picture? The first words that came to my mind were "French New Wave."

Why don't you call Anthropologie and explain that you have a three year old catalog that has caught your fancy and you wondered if there was someone who was familiar with the designs and who could chat with you for a minute...That way you may indeed find out what their intent was as to style...
I would call what is there...lady like, chic, a tad classic but adventuresome and just a smidge wild...
Interesting selections...even more interesting that it spoke to your heart as it did...Please follow through and share your findings...smile ....

Rachylou, I mean the ones pictured.

I actually don't like many of Anthro's looks in recent years. It's become a bit generic and predictable to me.

Googled French New Wave and yes I see some resemblances! It seems a bit more gamine and tomboy/girly than photos I posted. But elements are there.

I also love this look. It feels similar in vibe with the culottes and t-strap shoes.

Oh Crutcher that is a splendid idea!! I didn't even think of doing that. I'll call and see if they will help me.

It is quite ladylike. You nailed it though--I love how nontraditional its styled, and edgy with exotic color pairings and blousy shapes.

I have a thing for 1920s and 1930s clothes. I'm not sure if they flatter my tall curvy figure. But I love the drape and details.

The culottes and t-strap shoes make me think "bohemian" - but not boho. Bohemian with the 1960s cutout of the picture... lol.

rachylou well put! I love bohemian--without the hippy 1960s/Free People look. More the original idea of bohemian. head scarves and culottes and kimono jackets, sweaters and cigarette pants; and 1930s fur coats with the fur collars. Mmmm

Ok, here are my impressions:

lots of patterns
mainly smooth textures (except for some chunky cabled cardis)
luxe fabrics: floaty silk, jersey, taffeta, etc.
waist definition, even in an otherwise drapey look
glamour
womanly

I like Rachy's distinction between boho & bohemian. Have you seen Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (it's on Netflix or you could just Google image it)? It's set in the 20s, so the outfits don't have waist definition like in the catalogue, but I bet you'll still like Phryne Fisher's style. And she's a tall, hourglass-y woman (although I don't think she's that busty). The costuming on that show is to die for on all of the characters; it's just sumptuous.

I'm sure you could get drape that flattered your curves with fine jersey (especially in silk or bamboo or fine merino) or bias-cut woven fabrics. Yum. Now you've got me wanting to change my style!

Thimbelina, me too! I'm so excited that there's a season 2 now on Netflix now. I'm trying to ration myself so it lasts longer, but I have a feeling I'll end up going on a binge soon. hehe

Oh E, that is just perfect. I love every one of those details you listed, just never had listed it out or identified them. Thanks for putting them into words - I was stuck on the visual and couldn't seem to find definitions. But yes, I love all those things in scads!

I, too, love Rachy's distinction between bohemian and boho. It makes sense to me, as I've never liked the "hippie" look (except for a brief stint in college) but have always been drawn towards flappers and beatniks.

As for Miss Fisher... how do you know me so well? I absolutely love that show! I just started Season 2... I love every single outfit she wears, down to her furs and hats. I'm not quite as slender/lean as she is, but she and I are similar in body shape and height. I've been wanting a silk kimono robe to wear upon getting up in the mornings. It's just so luxurious.

Incidentally, I used to sport a 1920s bob. In retrospect, I don't think it worked very well with my extremely curly hair. And I think perhaps it aged me some. But at the time I adored it.

Astrid, that's kinda what I was thinking. For some reason though, I was wondering if there was more of a label for it. But I think not. And that's okay!

Thimblelina and E, do we need a YLF Miss Fisher's club?? Or maybe a Miss Fisher's 1920s WIW challenge?! :-O YAY!

BTW, have you seen Essie Davis (actress who plays Phrynie) in real life? She played in the Matrix and had very short hair and I barely recognized her as the same woman with a black bob!

That is such an interesting style! I'm not the best at style descriptors, but to me it looks like a melding of retro and punk with a bit of art deco thrown in.

I think you should seek out items like this and add them to your wardrobe. If you wear only one item at a time, you won't look out of place, I think. It's so much fun when we can add elements from our fantasy wardrobe to our real-life one.

I am picky about casual clothes too. If I am wearing just a t-shirt and jeans, the jeans are very classic looking, and the t-shirt is tucked just right, with an interesting belt. And then the shoe choice is oh-so-important. So you're not the only one who is uncomfortable being uber-casual!

And I didn’t know that Essie Davis was also in the Matrix: crazy! I love the whole cast of the show. A Miss Fisher’s challenge would be great fun; definitely a challenge for me but in a good way. I wish I had her lingerie wardrobe; she keeps talking about how lovely it is in silk, and I believe her! I have some silk pj pants that I sleep in w silk camis during transitional weather and it feels like heaven; I'd love to add a silk kimono too.

Gigi, I see the melding. The pompadour hair is very 1950s Teddy Girl--1980s punk, with some edges of Art Deco. It's really gorgeous and I'll continue to search for and add similar items to my wardrobe. I'm such a fantasy dresser!! Getting to wear more glam pieces every day as my "casual wear" makes me super uber happy

I'm glad I"m not alone when it comes to uber casual wear!! I'm much the same way. I may wear a tshirt, but I"ll pair it with ornate flats/booties, or a smashing topper. I can wear a sweatshirt, but it needs to have detail -- hi-low hemline, dolman sleeves, pleating -- or be paired with really exotic shoes or a beautiful blouse underneath to glam it up.

E, I love her clothes, but I pine for her lingerie wardrobe, including the silk kimono! The colors, the fabrics, the drape! It just looks and feels so much nicer than the usual cotton pajamas. I don't own any silk pjs, but I'm kind of tempted to sew a pair of silk French knickers and a simple cami...
