For Taylor: Hair color quezzie

Taylor, I have a question that no one in my salon has been able to answer to my satisfaction. I'm interested in going blonde, maybe even really blonde, like my hair idol, Michelle Williams ... but everyone in the salon discourages me. Why?

Maybe it's because of maintenance? I always insist on being pretty low-maintenance. At the moment, what they've been doing on me is called "flying colors" - it's painted on, and it gives me reddish highlights. But I am getting bored after 2 1/2 years of it and need something new. Would love to hear your thoughts!

I'm not Taylor, but I do hair also and I would say go for it! Your hair is short like mine and if it was long I would tell you don't do it, because of more lenght would have more damage. But as long as long as you get it done at the salon and are willing to go in more oten then that is ok.
I thought you had blond hair while back? Do you want to go even lighter?

Hey Laura,

I would guess that they are discouraging you only because creating blonde all over takes SKILL!! You must seek a color expert.
It is not as simple as painting on streaks or just adding one color, or doing a heavy highlight......lifting roots and adding a base , also lightning the ends to match that base etc...it is a advanced skill and does require an expert in the field. I find that those who discourage certain procedures are usually not comfortable with them:(

I would seek out a color expert, through friends or other recommendations because I would LOVE to see you all blonde and would happily do it myself it I could!!
After the initial color is there, the maintenence isn't as costly or as complicated..

Michelle has a beautiful color and it is NO Way created from a box or a one step process!

Ooh, interesting! We are so fortunate to have hair stylists on the forum. I am not sure why Vidal Sassoon can't handle this BUT ... I'll call my stylist to pursue it further. Maybe I haven't been forceful enough. If they can't or won't do it, and it would mean going to a different salon, it won't happen. Too complicated. Taylor, my fantasy is to jet to California so you can show these Chicagoans how it's done!

Renata, I didn't know you were a stylist! No wonder your hair is so fab. This explains a lot!

I am trying to think of someone on the forum who has the hair color I'm thinking of? Maybe Anna. Not sure what her natural color is, though -- It's probably lighter than mine.

Laura, I cannot recommend my colorist more highly. She is FABULOUS and only gets better every time I see her. The more she knows my hair and my likes, the more she encourages me to push my envelope. And darned if she isn't right every single time! I am so crazy about all the lovely dark streaks she has been putting in lately. Me, a die-hard confirmed blonde loving the darker colors! Never thought it was possible.

Anyway, her name is Angela at the Mario Tricoci salon at Old Orchard. She is seriously, seriously awesome.

LOL, could you be thinking of our own Angie as the color you are looking for?

Yes, this is great input, thank you Kristen! I am going to try again at my salon just to keep the logistics as simple as possible, but if the message still doesn't get through -- well, Kristen's hair color is just amazing so I would love to try her colorist.

Kristen, Angie's color is fab - but for me, I am thinking of something a little darker than Angie's, and warm in tone.

Renata owns a salon? Where have I been, living under a rock somewhere? Oh well ... at least I am clued in now

My natural hair color is a dark mousy blonde. I get highlights plus toner in the summer. In the winter I get high and low lights plus toner. The toner is semi-permament and fades after a few weeks, but my hair color is nicely settled in by then. I've been going to the same stylist for almost 2 years now, she always does a brilliant job with color.

Yes, I used to do colors while back, but now I just do cuts. I love snipping hair and making people feel fab!
