Hi Fabbers!
We are driving down to So Cal in a few weeks with a one day stop over in Westlake or Hollywood or somewhere around there. DD's would love a to go go a cute shopping area--preferably something with different stores than a Westfield type mall. I haven't booked a room anywhere yet so I'm pretty open except that it has to be "on the way" to Carlsbad. (DDs are 13 and 16.) I'd love any suggestions.

Not from So Cal, but whenever I go out there to visit my daughter (22), she always wants to go shopping in Santa Monica. There's an UO, a Brandi, and lots of funky shops she loves. Definitely a fun shopping experience!

Thanks, Carter. They loved Santa Monica but we were thinking of something different this year. BM sure is popular isn't it? They opened a store here and it is always packed.

More thumbs up for killer Santa Monica shopping. All outside - I don't like malls at all. Santa Monica is an all round gorgeous place to be.

It's a little further north, but there's a big outlet mall in Camarillo.

And I'm prejudiced but Old Town Pasadena is very cute. And if you go there I will personally show you around!

If non-Westfield stores are what you want, you could try the Melrose strip. There is also the celebrity area, Robertson Blvd. Abbot Kinney is even less mall-like, but it is farther from the area you mentioned.

For teenage girls my first suggestion would be Melrose as well. If you happen to be there on a Sunday check out Melrose Trading Post at Fairfax High.

If either of your girls are into music I'd also recommend Amoeba Music in Hollywood. It is one of the last great record stores anywhere.

There is also Fashion Island in Newport Beach in south Orange County. Also outdoor mall, overlooking ocean.
