You asked how I was going to wear my new plaid shirt in a recent thread. Here's one way:

I went to a very casual birthday party with dear friends last night and did a Casual Equestrian vibe. I was ready to train for Polo with Ralph Lauren. Exact items in Finds.

I combined a lace cami with the new tartan shirt - semi tucked into white cropped jeans. Added burgundy boots, belt and bag with my specs. Pearl necklace and bracelets, and my topped it off with 10 year old citron peacoat.

Bummer that the mismatched plaid pants are sold out. I was soooo looking forward to wearing the combination on Xmas day. But the white jeans felt nice and different too. And horsey, which made me happy.

I loooove your bright and cheery holiday take on the Casual Equestrian vibe!

Casual Equestrian is one of the monikers I've been using for my style goals this year, and I tend to veer toward navy and neutrals with it. Seeing this interpretation with the white pants and the citrus topper gives me ideas on how to brighten it up.

Angie.....do you have any tips for pulling off the mismatched plaid look? I've been studying the J Crew picture.....some colours (red, yellow, white) are repeated in both items....but not all. It's a hectic look but kind of fun.

Hopefully the plaid pants are restocked so you can complete that look.

Marilyn, I do. The plaid patterns need to have all or enough of the SAME colours in them. That way your eye can rest and enjoy the repetition. Here's a more literal match. Maybe I need to get the forest green plaid to match the shirt? Not as striking though...and I'm much more of a "red gal".

I've found a couple shirt options that I might try with my BR tartan pants. They're navy and green...more navy. I like this BR shirt....it's rayon so should have nice drape. It's also navy and green...but heavier on the green with the addition of yellow and white stripes. The JC shirt looks like it could be a literal match for my pants....maybe too literal though.

I should rephrase that. There is no "right" amount of femininity. A better way to say it would be: it adds an expected pop of femininity , and the white jeans take it to another level altogether. Love this!

Festive equestrian for the win! I wonder if that shirt would work with the plan jeans I have. The jeans are reds, teal green and black, but the plaid is on the diagonal . I'm not sure if that would help the plaid mixing or be a disaster. Love both your outfits.

Love!!!! I wore so much plaid as a child and even into my 20's I just can't do it anymore. I DO lust for those red plaid pants, though. I searched (half heartedly) last holiday for a pair. I want to wear them with an animal print sweater!

I think of myself as a stripe girl, but seeing these plaids is making my heart sing. I want to wear plaid!! Is that a seasonal thing? I can't remember ever thinking that before.

Sterling, me too, lol. When Brooklyn did the patterns challenges, I realized that I hardly have any regular patterns like stripes, polka-dot, and plaid. I know from plaid shirts past that i don’t wear them, yet all this talk has me wondering if I should try again.

Why is "plaid" ( tartan to me) festive? I don't get it. Is it the red? No-one here would wear tartan in December.Unless you were hired to wear costume. It's summer and you would look like you were doing a sort of weird Scottish Santa costume I think? A major difference between the hemispheres? No commenters from the Southern Hemisphere here I notice. Of course it is a cute outfit but I don't really understand.

Hi Jenni -- I do think it has something to do with the Holidays and December. It just suddenly feels right to me. I doubt I would be interested in it during the Summer.

Sterling, what? I just responded to your interest in buying less on La Ped’s thread, lol. I really do have enough clothing, so am trying to be measured with the buying. That whole parade of tops I tried with the shorts & skinnies came from my closet, except the cardigans and bell sleeve top (and I think I’m returning that top). When I get down to size, there are a pair of windowpane pants and a glen plaid dress in crazy colors waiting for me. But good old tartan, I’d probably never wear.

Jenni, people also listen to the song “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music around Christmas here. I feel the same way about it as you do about tartan.

Jenni........I don't think of tartan/plaid as being particularly festive. It reads fall/winter dressing to me. Doing tartan in reds reads more festive to me.....so this Canadian would say it's pattern + colour.

Sterling -- I always feel better in stripes in warm-weather, and plaid in cool weather. I think part if it is fabrication/availability. Plus, horizontal stripes have a nautical subtext, plaid a woodsy/hunter/Highlander one. I do have some pieces that cross over between seasons, I'm not rigid about it. Gingham and windowpane are good warm-weather alternatives to true tartans.
