Oh April that is so sweet. And yes, this prayer, which basically blesses that we have reached this point in time and is traditionally said with every new event and holiday, is especially poignant right now. There has been too much suffering everywhere - let's hope some healing can begin.
The translation of the shehecheyanu (shuh hecheh YAN oo, with the “ch” pronounced in your throat, like a brief gargle) is this:
Blessed are You, Adonai our G_d, ruler of the universe, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this moment.
Now, I hasten to say that I do not pray in a traditional way - my higher power is something like “mystery of lovingkindness” - but I have always found reciting this blessing one of the loveliest customs in Judaism.
It’s meant to be said whenever a “first” or “first of the season” occurs. The first firefly of spring, the first snowfall, and so on. In later spring, I once heard a dear friend call to her young son playing outdoors, “Listen - I hear the ice cream truck! Say the shehecheyanu."
