As I wrote in my blog comment, I have a bit of a obsession with plaid suits. I find them less strict and corporate than solid suits, and they are perfectly suited to my (pre-pandemic) work style. I tend to wear pieces as separates a lot, but also as a suit styled in a fairly simple manner to dress it down, with a plain knitted top and booties/loafers (no sneakers allowed at work). This has become my answer when I am unsure at the correct level of formality. I have also become pretty good at stalking and tend to purchase most of them at about 70% off, sometimes hunting matching pieces at different sources. There were some crazy sales during the current pandemic, so I took advantage. The first three suits were bought during this time and not yet worn.
