For Angie: BR peplum suit

In my search for a suit, Angie suggested I give this one a shot at Banana Republic. Disclaimer: the pants are at least two sizes too big - they didn't have my size in the store, but I can order them. The jacket is a size larger than I normally wear at BR - but I don't think I could button a size smaller. How do the shoulders look?

I'm pretty sure the current pant length will give Angie apoplexy!

I'm on the fence, so I'm interested in hearing what you ladies think. Sorry the pics aren't all that great - good dressing room photos are hard to do!

What's your goal in buying a cropped pant suit? Is it for casual/social wear, or is it for work? If it's for work, is this something you could comfortably wear there? I know that a cropped pant suit would NOT fly in my work environment, but of course I could wear it anywhere else. Other than thinking about where you would use it, it's a flattering color and the fit looks fine from the photos...

I really like it on you. The shoulders on the jacket look just right to me. Unless you work in a very conservative enviroment, you could definately wear cropped pants. And do I dare say that I like the lengh on the cropped pants the way it is now;)

As you predicted, the length and fit of the pants are not my best (hems are too wide and the length is off), but I LOVE the jacket! The colour is really flattering.

Anna, the suit would be for work. I'm in a fairly conservative work environment, but could get away with cropped pants in the summer. I'm thinking that my suit collection is not quite complete enough to justify a suit that can't be worn year-round right now.

Angie, I am surprised at how much I do like the jacket. Thanks for the encouragement to try it on! I have a call in to get my NAS appointment booked - was a little behind the 8 ball this year!

Save your money for NAS. I got a sneak peek at the Via C stuff, there's a grey Smythe jacket that I'd think be good for you.

Did you try on the smaller size? As your instinct tells you, the shoulders look big to me and like there is plenty of room in the waist, so you should at least try the smaller one on. The cut is really nice and flattering on you, though.

cjh, they didn't have the smaller size in the store, so I was trying to judge by the fit of this one. It *just* buttons at the waist (I am an apple through and through!) so I don't think a smaller size would fit unfortunately.

Honestly, the shoulders do seem a tad big to me. The shape is nice though. I love the idea of a Smythe jacket but I suppose they don't sell trousers.

Lovely suit, however I do think the jacket is a bit big. Like the color, am unsure about the length. This is a very subtle peplum yes? Because I am having tousle discerning it.

I am surprised that I don't dislike the pants! It think because they are worn with the jacket of a same color, it is still a vertical and sophisticated look (rather than a squat one, which is my issue with crops). Both the jacket and pants look too big to me, I would like to see both more fitted and sleek looking. I am surprised they don't have a skirt option. It is such a pretty color and the cut looks refreshingly feminine.

I too would love a Smythe jacket but I LOVE my BR jacket I got this past January, it is very well made and the fabric holds up and travels well. I think I could purchase two suits at BR for the price of one Smythe jacket.

I actually really like this on you, as is! The crops look a bit slouchy and not in a bad way. You totally rock them with those heels. And I would have never guessed you were an apple, BTW!

I have a hunch that a size down will be too small. The shoulders on this jacket are exaggerated - I have had this jacket on quite a few bodies. It fits really comfortably around the tummy area. Look at the shoulders on the model:

A Smythe jacket is fab of course (I am encouraging it!), but it is not a substitute for a suit.
