Flip-flops that are not too flippy

I know they are not the best choice of footwear but flip-flops are what make summer for me. Nothing like the casual ease of having a pair out by each dorwy so I can slide them on and go.

For whatever reason, none of the 15 pairs I have tried feel secure. I have only worn Indian made brands (Bata, Gliders etc.) which seem to be more secure. It makes sense because several (including me when I lived there) wear flip-flops exclusively.

So I want to hear recommendations from committed flip-flop wearers about brands they like for frequent use.

Are we talking leather or foam? I haven’t seen a good pair of foam in awhile, I was thinking about that... sorry! No help am I?

I have a couple pairs of Bernardo Miami sandals. They feel secure because the strap isn’t loose, like rubber flip flips are, on me, at least. . They run small, and I have had to go up an entire size. I love the quality of Bernardo sandals.

I really like these Breezes Seas by Clarks because you can actually size the part that goes across the top of your foot, you can see it in the yellow photo. It’s a little expensive for a flip flop, but I’m on summer 3 or 4. You might also like the yoga pair, its super comfy, but its not great if it gets wet, whereas the Clark’s pair is fab for the beach and handles the water and sand really well.

I’m very committed, but I wear very plain ones. They are from reef and what I like about them is the sole is lightly cushioned without too much arch support (as I find arch support is usually too much for me) and no texture.

You might think I’m nuts for making a big deal out of plain black flip flops, but they’re my daily-drivers throughout the summer and I need them to be exactly right.

I like my Vionics, the arch hits in just the right place for me. Not sure if you were interested in leather though.

These might be more substantial than what you are looking for, but I’m a fan of these Merrell sandals. They stay on very well, don’t ‘slap’ the foot, and the ‘toe sock’ hides my bunions.

Rachy - I love them in all forms! And generally have several pairs.

Suzieq - I stopped wearing Birkenstocks and switched to Birkis because that ridged bump was hitting an especially tender spot. Time to revisit these.

Runcarla - You are right, these are just a tad more substantial that I like but that sole looks cushy and comfy.

Archies are amazing podiatrist-designed flip flops that were a game changer for me. I could never wear regular ones as yes, they were too floppy and the constant foot sliding felt uncomfortable and unsupported. Plus I have bony narrow feet and the straps were always way too loose. With these I could go on long walks and they were amazingly comfortable yet secure. The arch support (hence the name!) is amazing.

I predominantly use FitFlops & Hush Puppies (especially their BodyForm collection), because I like the 'straight across' styles rather than the ones with a toe post (those tend to rub). I've also liked Aerosoles but don't own any now.

Like you, I found that the arch support in my EVA (waterproofed) Birkenstocks was becoming too much for my feet. People suggested switching to their original cork footbed styles, but I really like the ability to wash & go my flipflops (I'm very hard on mine, since I live in a subtropical climate - I may have thrown them in the washing machine a few times & they came out fine, but shh ).

@lpgal: I bought the birks for the beach. When I’m not at the pool or Beach, I wear Bzees sandals, which are very comfortable & washable.

Zaeobi - mine are washed frequently too. I found the Birki soft footbed more tolerable but they are harder to find.

I swear by Merrell sandals when I still wore sandals. They were so comfortable and stayed on securely. Not a flip flop wearer but a good friend who is over 60, wore nice leather ones even to her daughters wedding!

The Crocs Sexi Flip are very lightweight and stay secure on the foot. I loved mine until they fell apart. Have fun researching and trying them all on!

If you have a broader foot, FitFlops are often a good fit.

I have some Nikes that are pretty good. I am also very picky about them. Too often for me the straps are too big so they go flying off. Sometimes going down a half size helps but of course then the footbed can be too short. I also find if the strap comes higher up on the side of the foot then they don't flop as bad. Let us know what you decide on!

@elpgal: Bzees are machine washable, they have enough arch support (for me at least) & they come in medium & wide widths. The ones I wear all the time are the Dream sandals, which have an adjustable strap in the back.
