Fitting room privacy

I was listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about a handful of stores that have reversed the slats in the doors so that security as well as others can see into the fitting room. I find this disgusting and will not be trying on clothes in those stores. I will be taking things home to try on and then returning them which is a huge waste of time and quite an aggrevation. There have been cameras in some stores for years - the idea doesn't thrill me but I don't find it a big deal either. I assume that most stores has a reasonable process for screening their security people. And let's be honest - if someone really wants to perv on pictures of other people in their underwear, there are a lot easier ways for them to do that than to get a job in a clothing store.

This sounds bizarre. Do they want to drive people to online retail? I have to say that even in higher end stores in Europe I feel there is a lot less privacy than in a normal US dressing room. Of course people here seem to make a much lesser deal about nudity in general, so it could be related to that.

Whenever I am in a dressing room with slats, I always just hang the clothes on the door to block out any possible views in.

Speaking of dressing room privacy, last month I was in Zara for the first time and there was a male employee who was the dressing room attendant. (Meaning that he stationed himself right there at the entrance and counted your items and you were to exchange extras with him.) I don't mind that there are male sales associates but to have one as the attendant in a woman's only clothing store seems odd. Plus I could only bring 6 items in and it was a pain to completely get dressed instead of just wearing my tank and slip to exchange items out.

Plus I thought it was funny that this male attendant told a husband that "women only" were allowed in the dressing room area.

Ugh. AJ's Zara story reminded me that last week I was in AT trying on a couple of items. A young male employee kept coming in and out of the dressing room area. It was a bit creepy. He seemed so out of place in a women's store, especially hanging out in the dressingroom area.

When I worked at Ann Taylor I would always usher the boyfriends/husbands and the random male friend OUT of the dressing room..always met with rolled eyes! I would explain "This is a ladies fitting room...they are in their undergarments here"

Yes, that would really annoy me. I won't be taking things home -- I think I'll try AJ's trick and hang stuff in front of the slats -- but it's an insult to my integrity, and a possible opportunity for abuse on the part of the shop.

I fell ok with store employees being able to see but I am wary of stores that use cameras. I am very wary of trying on sports bras in REI, so I buy several sizes and try at home.

I too will be checking the direction of the slats. That is as inappropriate as it gets.

Boo! In the future, I'm going to take AJ's idea, and hang clothes on the door. I'll have to remember to snag extra clothes before I go in, if I'm only trying on one item!

I kind of expect this and wouldn't think twice of male fitting room attendants or the slats being turned. I figure that if I am going to get all or mostly naked in public there is always going to be the chance of being exposed. As long as there is no one lurking around acting predatory, I wouldn't feel uncomfortable or violated. Then again, I have been told that I might have been raised without a normal sense of privacy . . . . excuse me, I have to go as I am at my parent's house and my father is walking around in his briefs in front of our picture window again.

I always bring in extra clothes, the longer the better. Like moomoo dresses.
