With a heel specifically. Do they work? Or it is just awkwardness?

Ho. Not the boot person here but that's not enough to stop me. I wonder, what is the point of the high heel and the mid-calf? So perhaps I am too goal-oriented rather than playful and appreciative of architectural wonders.
Mid-calf can be easier to fit and also can be less fitted and allow tucking when tall boots might not (either one). Or may cost less (well, in theory). And heels can be leg-lengthening or foot-exposing, but high heeled boots do not seem to do that and less so in mid-calf. Hmm.

The boots that I wear all the time are fitted mid calf boots with a heel, and I think they work pretty well:

I've definitely found them to be leg-lengthening, but I tend to wear them with black skinny jeans, so you don't notice the cutoff at mid calf as much.

I have a pair of fitted mid-calf boots and I quite love them; they are vintage though, so I don't think they may fit under the same mod umbrellas as your choices (btw: that second pair are amazing).

Those look really difficult to wear, especially the fuchsia striped ones. But of course those are the ones I really like. If anyone can do it, you can, Anna!

I love boots like this. They look sleek under pants or over skinnies, they don't show your socks, and if worn with skirts they keep more of your leg warm and dry.

I love the second pair. I view them as art or sculpture, as I could not wear them. But appreciate them- oh, yes!!!

I have a friend who wears them over skinnies and under rolled boyfriends. Look great.

I used to have a pair and loved them. As long as the leg is low-contrast and the ankle is well fitted, I think they can be really flattering.
