Fish tacos!

Ever since Jen’s post about her white dress, I’ve been hungry for fish tacos. I don’t believe they’re available for sale anywhere in Berlin, so I might have to make some.

The basics aren’t hard to figure out—I’m pretty sure I can get some corn tortillas, then I’ll chop up some pico de Gallo (no cilantro for me, tyvm), sauté whitefish (but in what kind of oil?) and drizzle with lime juice. That might hit the spot, but I’m sure I’ve had much better. I feel like there should be some carrots and red cabbage in there somehow.

Who can help me out with tips on making yummy fish tacos?

Try googling "yummy fish tacos," and you will find lots of recipes.

The cat, yeah, there are a lot of recipes for them, but they’re one of those things where you feel like hearing it right from somebody who does their own is somehow more “real”—sort’ e like Mac & cheese or borscht; everyone has a general idea, but lots of people have their own “secret recipes”. What dishes are like that where you are?

I like fish tacos with a crema sauce. Usually done as some sort of variation on crema/sour cream/Mayo and chipotle or the like. Must have pickled cabbage!

You’ve got the recipe right! Although my impression is white cabbage is more common that red cabbage in most of Mexico.

Wish I could help, but I never make these. My husband doesn’t care for them, so we opt for other varieties when we cook at home. (And why would we when we live in a wonderland of great street tacos?!)

One thing I would add to the recipe, though, is seasoning the fish with a Mexican spice blend before sautéing—salt, pepper, chili powder, garlic, cumin, maybe paprika. I tend to use olive oil for everything, but a neutral oil like canola works great too.

What Jenn said for the spices. The Jamie Oliver recipe looks good too! Oh my goodness there are so many good sauces in Mexico, but pico de gallo is good choice.

yumm! one of my favs. We did some mexican inspired cooking while in germany few years back visiting my brother. I found corn tortillas, and some very basic ingredients in the standard grocery, good thing you dont like cilantro--we couldn't find any

I use shredded cabbage, a little fresh lime juice, chili powder, salt for the slaw & some chopped fresh tomato & onion

Sauce: 1/4 C Sour cream with 1 T lime juice, salt, pepper, cumin, oregano and a dash of hot sauce. Can add chopped jalapeño if you like it hot

Dust fish with cornstarch, panko, or cornmeal (with a little salt and pepper added) & Lightly fry in olive oil. (We don't typically do a traditional deep fry for a little lighter meal)

the key is to have a little acid (lime juice or vinegar) to add a little zing and contrast with the fish.

Now Im hungry for some! we often make them with halibut, cod or salmon--whichever one looks good and is on sale.

For toppings, I make pico de gallo, guacamole, and a red cabbage slaw (just red cabbage, carrots, and scallions, with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, a few drops of honey, salt & pepper).

Always a hit in my family.

Carambola, just the pictures from that link have me drooling! I can get the cheese when I get the corn tortillas. I’m not sure they have sriracha, but they have a ton of similar sauces. Or I might substitute sambal oelek, which I have in my fridge. Your slaw sounds great & easy to make.

We love these shrimp tacos; you would easily replace with grilled white fish. Incidentally, roasted cauliflower is also excellent as a meat replacement in tacos!

Helena, that does sound tasty! Thanks for the recipe—I finally got to Superiberico to pick up the tortillas and cheese today. My son commented that he’d like a grill; maybe that will be a surprise for him on graduation day.

The best fish tacos use a bit of Cole slaw. The crunch is nice.
