First trip to Nordstrom Rack!

I made my first visit to the local Rack store today -- what fun! I got an apple-green Halogen short-sleeved jacket; a cream stretchy surplice top from Classiques Entier; and the Born flower sandals that Angie has written about, in silver. The Halogen jacket needs to be nipped in a little at the waist, but that's true of anything that fits in the shoulder.

Maya, don't give up! I saw a lot of good things, and even though most of the items were discounted at the level you might find if a store had a really good sale, that Classiques Entier top was marked down from $118 to $29.99.

I think the Rack is a good place to go when you just feel like browsing and being surprised. But if you're after something specific, it's not the place to go. At least not the one I am near. I have been there at least 12 times since it opened and have not come out with anything even once.

You're so right, Maya. I think that all discount shopping is about serendipity, and I never understand when people recommend going to, for example, a thrift shop with a specific item in mind. Guess what -- you're not likely to find it.

As you say, this kind of shopping is all about being surprised.

For what it's worth, I don't think it makes a difference whether its a thrift shop, department store or discount store - no guarantees that the perfect item is going to be there! It's so nice when it happens though.

I've been to the regular nordstrom store lots of times and walked out empty handed. Yet I've been to the big thrift shop around the corner and had tons of luck. You just never know! The very best is when the stars align, the budget AND the items all work out at once!

I love Nordstrom Rack but it's someplace you have to browse. I try to go 5-6 times a year after I've gotten a postcard about new arrivals or when they've marked things down.

I find jewelry and shoes there pretty reliably.

Some things are manufactured specially for their stores and they're alright but not necessarily better than other discounters. It's the odds and ends from the stores where the real treasures are located.

I got some Perricone tinted moisturizer there and really liked it so I often go through the make-up area. It's a way to try out department store products without the pushy saleslady and huge price tag.
