First fryes - which color is most versatile?

I've been convinced to try the skinnies + tall boot combination, and I'm ready to bite the bullet and buy myself a pair of Fryes. I'm looking at the Harness 12Rs because I'm only 5'1, so a 12" shaft would almost be at knee height for me.

There are a few colors on sale at endless.com (Amazon's store?) . I tend to wear a lot of blacks and grays as core colors, which makes me think that maybe the charcoal would be best?

But part of me really likes that traditional look of the medium/dark wash jean tucked into a brown boot - not the most leg-elongating look, though.

Which is the most versatile? For reference, I'm a work-at-home mom in California - most of my outfits are MOTG-style casual.

Think about your outfits now and how many of them you would pair with brown vs black or grey. For my wardrobe, the charcoal would be more versatile.

i could never look at a boot and determine whether it will work for me, i have very thick calves and for the most part i cant zip or pull on most boots to get a great fit but i love tall boots

Abie, that's good advice - I just did a full closet inventory (rebuilding my wardrobe post-baby) so that shouldn't be too difficult. Problem is, almost all of my pants (other than one or two pairs of jeans) are flared (I haven't bought new pants in a long time.....), so I might have to buy new pants for this ensemble as well.

Deedee, that's a good point about fit - I have athletic calves and I'm not 100% sure whether they will fit me at the calf, especially with jeans tucked in ! Endless.com and zappos have free shipping on returns, so it may take a few tries...

Have you measured your calf length or tried on the Harness in person? I only ask because I'm 5'2" with short legs (29" inseam) and short shins to boot, but I prefer a 14-15" shaft height in flat boots to hit comfortably below the knee as a "tall" boot. The Harness would fit as a mid-calf boot on me, which I find tough to style.

In terms of color, I vote for charcoal (or black, for that matter). I basically live in tall boots during the fall and winter, and did so for two years in a single pair of black boots. Unless you wear brown belts with everything or you want to tuck white/light-colored skinny jeans, I think black is the most versatile color. Dark jeans + black boots still looks classy and is more leg-elongating if that's a priority.

Sounds like the charcoal might be your best bet. A lot of women on this forum own cognac boots and they wear them with many colors, but it kind of depends on the "vibe" of your wardrobe and lifestyle. Just a thought.

As a boot novice (not yet sure how much I'll get out of them), it sounds like a darker color is the way to go for more versatile use.

It also sounds like I should probably try on a few styles in person to see how they fit. Should I be trying to get as close to the knee as possible without going over?

I'm also wondering whether it's madness to buy them now (beginning of summer) - but now I'm slightly obsessed....

Charcoal might be the most versatile but I really like the softer look of the brown ones!

What color are your current boots?

I personally love to mix brown with black and charcoal - I think that both colors are plenty versatile and it depends on whether you want a more sleek, dressy look (black) or a more rugged look (brown).

I think you should be trying to get as close to the knee as possible while still being able to *sit down*. Especially for shorter folks, a standard 16" shaft might feel fine while standing up but dig into your knee once it's bent at a 90" angle. Trying on styles in person and measuring the shaft height would be a good bet. Online measurements tend to be unreliable for circumference, but I've found them pretty true for shaft height which doesn't change much by size.

Right now is a good time buy boots on sale! I've been watching prices since December and now is the lowest they've hit on several styles.

Like Rae said, I would tend toward the brown if you want a more casual vibe and charcoal if you want a more classic/dressy vibe. Since you wear a lot of charcoal and black and gray, the charcoal might make more sense, too.

What color is your hair? I love my taupe and lighter color boots to bookend my blonde hair. You might want to consider this when you're making a decision.

I'm a brunette. I actually like the look of a skin-tone boot, too, to elongate the leg for wearing with skirts.

Now I want 3 pairs of boots, LOL, one in brown, one in taupe and one in charcoal (my poor wallet!).

OTOH, black and charcoal are also more rock n roll than brown, not just classic. However I agree that brown boots are more sort of rugged or cowboy-ish. (All of which is awesome.) It really depends on the look you want. I love both.

As a fellow brunette & like you LOVE blue denim (all washes) tucked into a pair of brown boots & also black skinnies look great tucked into brown boots so that is my 1st choice. I am no expert on shaft length - body proportions - just know what I like & prefer a mid-calf boot on me.

Good advice above, wanted also to point out that this particular boot style is "ankle surrendering", if that's OK with you. I have motorcycle riding boots this shape and despise that they go straight up from my feet and don't have any ankle shaping.
