first ebay, now etsy!!! EDIT: addictive online shopping.

At the end of July, I am starting a 1-year SYC /shopping ban (more details to follow closer to the date, already typed it out for myself though). I am allowing myself until then to shop a bit more than usual to whittle down my wish list.

So I started purchasing on etsy -- looked for years but never bought anything until recently:

I think I bought about 20 items on ebay in the past year.

Is it just me? How "bad" are you with online shopping?

I do most (75% or more) of my shopping online just because I have limited brick and mortar access. If you take the time to check measurements and have patience, you can actuallly score some real gems. I find the feature to be able to specifically search helps me narrow down exactly what I want, whereas in a store I wander until I happen upon something. But the obvious downside, is you can't try the item on, or feel the fabric, etc. It's a trade off for sure.

Shoes are 50/50 store/online for me, but clothing is almost 100% online - mostly due to sizing. Though I was just as bad about shopping back when I actually had to leave the house!

I love Etsy! And Diana's totally right: Heartsy is dangerous.

Good luck with your year long SYC, Rosee. I started mine ( http://www.gurgleslurp.com/?tag=syc ) on June 3rd and have been surprised at how easy it's been so far - surprising because when I first jumped on the SYC wagon (Rae's April/May ban) - I was horrible! I think this time is easier because it's been well thought out, and I have a few things I'm allowed to buy if I find them (I haven't bought or even looked for any of those things yet, but knowing that I'll be 'allowed' to fill those particular wardrobe holes somehow makes it far easier to not want the things I don't need.)

I wonder how many of us have imposed long term shopping bans?

I'm 7 days into my 6 month shopping ban, and I'm so impressed that you're about to do a year ban!!!

Etsy can be dangerous, especially because of the lack of returns and inability to try things on first (same with ebay). I tend to trust etsy pictures more than ebay pictures, and also buy more on etsy. I buy almost all of my jewelry and accessories from etsy these days, in large part because I feel better about supporting etsy sellers (whether they're making their goods or scouring thrift stores for them) than buying things from big corporations. I'm including jewelry and accessories in my shopping ban, but I think that once I'm back to shopping I will continue to get them from etsy.

I buy most of my stone beads for jewelry creation on ebay, books from Amazon.com and clothing from JCP and Target online. So far, I have only perused etsy, but LOVE what I see.

Today I bought a pair of Birkenstock Gizeh sandals (the thong style ones) and I was very happy. Just in case, I decided to look them up on ebay... and they are $50 less (for new in box sandals)!!! Me thinks I will be doing a return tomorrow afternoon.

I'm looking forward to SYC b/c then I will be thinking about other things to do with my time.
