Finds not loading

I noticed maybe about a week ago (?) that when I go to the forum, the members' finds are automatically displayed at the top, and you can click on them for more info. However, a few days ago, I noticed that the finds no longer display. The space is there for them to be displayed, but it just says "Loading." Any ideas? I have a Mac, OS 10.6.8, and I use Safari 5.1.10.

I also see that the finds are not loading when attached to people's posts, and I can't even view my own finds now (with the Finds menu option attached to my profile avatar in the upper right-hand corner of the screen).

Are you still seeing this problem? We did have a glitch earlier today, but I thought it was sorted out. If you are still seeing it, please let me know which web browser you are using.

Yep, I've still got the problem. I just restarted my machine to make sure that there wasn't some kind of other glitch happening.

I'm using Safari 5.1.10.

Although the screen says "loading," the little thingamajig that moves in the URL area at the top of the page to show that the page is still loading is still. So the page does not seem to get "hung up" loading the images; it rather looks like the images just don't get picked up at all.

OK, more crazy stuff. I am unable to edit posts. When I hover over the little cog wheel, I don't get the menu anymore (I think it was to edit or report post). Interestingly, if I hover over the cog wheel *as the page is loading*, I can sometimes get the edit function to show. But I have to be hovering over the cog wheel as the page loads.

I also no longer get the menu when I hover over my avatar in the upper right-hand corner (Profile, My Posts, etc.).

Gigi, I see Firefox in your dock. Can you please see whether you have the same issue with that browser?

I suspect that something is corrupted in your Safari cache (the place the browser remembers things to speed up page loads) and you might have to clear the cache to fix this. But let's first see whether Firefox is any better.

Yes, Greg, Firefox, although I hate it to death and avoid using it at all costs, is better. YLF is acting normally on it. Should I clear the Safari cache?

Gigi, yes, I think clearing the cache is necessary.

And I completely understand your feelings about Firefox. I use all the browsers daily, but definitely prefer Chrome. I find it slightly better than Safari. Firefox is lagging behind though.

Argh, it didn't work. I see there is an option to "reset" Safari in the same menu as the cache deletion. There are several options as part of the reset. Is this worth doing?

(For what it's worth, I cleared the cache twice. I also restarted Safari. However, I did not restart my computer.)

I think the reset may be necessary. Given that Firefox is ok on your computer, and Safari is ok on ours, it must be something unique to your browser right now. You could try the restarting the machine first just in case that works. Resetting Safari will mean that you need to reenter passwords to the sites you use.

Rats, it didn't work. I checked all the boxes in the reset options, so the entire thing should have been reset. I also shut my computer down and then restarted it. Still the same problem.

I will also mention that I have been having problems with the font on the site ever since the finds function was added. The font used for the running text has been fluctuating between a heavier font and a lighter version of the font. Sometimes when I refresh a page, the font changes to the lighter version.

I do have an automatic backup of my computer that is made continuously. Would it be worth restoring the Safari application? Or do you know if there are some folders in the library that should be deleted? (Like a preferences file?)

That's interesting about the font. Just to be sure, by "running text" do you mean the body text of the posts (like the paragraph you're reading right now)?

I don't think reverting to an older version of the browser will help, and I'm hesitant to do anything in the preferences folders. Can you tell me what the version number is for Safari? Also, do you have any extensions installed (available from the "Window" menu, "Extensions" item)?

Also... a few minutes ago that might be related. I don't know how that bug could cause all these problems for you, without causing them for us, but no environment is identical so I guess it is possible.

So I'm holding thumbs that your Safari works properly now.

By "running text," yes, I mean the font of the individual posts, like the font of this sentence. It was strange...I might be reading a topic that was two pages, and the first page would appear in the heavier font, while the second page once loaded appeared in the lighter font. Whenever I would type a post, it would always appear in heavier font in the text box as I was typing, but once it was submitted it looked like the other font on the loaded page (either heavy or light, depending on which was the case).

I wouldn't be reverting to an older version of the browser per se if I recovered it from my backup; I would just revert to the application as it was a week ago (I haven't installed any truly new versions of the software for some time). Or is it not possible for the application file itself to become corrupt?

It is Safari 5.1.10. For extensions, I have an Amazon wish list thing (kind of like the finds button) that can add a non-Amazon item to my Amazon wish list. I also have Ad Block installed.

The only other thing I can think of that might muck with things is the fact that a couple of weeks ago, I think I installed the latest version of Acrobat Reader. I don't seem to have installed any system updates for some time.

If you are still experiencing the issue, then one thing to try is turning off the Amazon extension and Ad Block temporarily. Ad Block in particular could be interfering with YLF code.

Turned off Ad Block and the Amazon thing, but still no luck. At first I thought it had worked, because I did get the menu when mousing over my avatar and name in the upper right-hand corner, but I discovered that that was because my mouse had been hovering over it when the page loaded. When I reloaded the page, it did not enable me to get the menu. Hmm. But I did get ads, so I know that the Ad Blocker disabling had taken effect.

I will mention one other thing in case it happens to be related. The last couple of days, I did have some problems with my cursor in Safari acting weird. I was doing some online shopping and had a lot of tabs open, which can sometimes be a strain on the memory. The cursor became the swirling icon that you get when the program needs to stop a bit to load something. However, after the loading had stopped and I was able to access the tabs, the cursor did not change back to its normal arrow but remained the swirling thingie. In other words, I could use it just like a regular cursor (the computer wasn't hung up), but it was the swirling thingie that shouldn't have allowed me to use it as a regular cursor. This happened in Safari on all web pages, if I recall, not just on the forum. I think it was OK in other applications. It is OK today, though.

Does this give you any ideas of what I should try? Or do you think I need to call Apple customer support at this point? (Of course, they will say it is just this website, I'm sure...you know how one tech group likes to blame the other.)

OK, one more thing...despite the wacky cursor thing I mentioned in the previous post, I *do* think that my problems are related only to this site. I say that because of the fact that I cannot access my finds *at all*, even when I go in through my avatar. Plus, I haven't noticed anything weird on other sites...although to be fair, I am almost exclusively at YLF.

OK, I need the award for the most replies to your own thread, ha ha.

I went to the finds page again and hit the "reload" and "reset" buttons. My finds appeared, but only for an instant—within a split second, they disappeared again. I hit the buttons again, and the same thing happened.

One thing I would recommend is upgrading to the latest version of Safari. I just noticed your reply regarding the version number and it is many versions behind the latest one, which is 7.0.4.

I have the same issue. To upgrade to Safari 7 I also have to upgrade to OS X Mavericks. Is Mavericks any better and worth the effort.

Anna, do you mean the Finds are not appearing in your browser?

Also, what is the version number on your browser?

Regarding Mavericks, it is hard to judge what makes something worth the effort because everyone has different requirements. But generally the latest versions are going to get more love an attention than older ones, so often you're better off in areas like security. Later this year Apple will release Yosemite, and my experience is that it is better to move with Apple than to make big step changes in OS (e.g. from Lion to Yosemite).

On the other hand, switching to Chrome might be less disruptive than switching to another OS.

If anyone is having this problem and knows how to use the console in the browser, please take a look and check whether any error messages are appearing there. To do so, first enable Developer mode by checking "Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar" in the Advanced section of the Preferences.

Then select "Show Error Console" in the develop menu and load a page on YLF where you see the problem. There will be a bunch of messages saying "Invalid CSS property declaration at: *", which can be ignored. But are there any other messages?

Thanks Anna. I'm still not clear on whether Finds are appearing in your browser. Do you have that problem too? That is, the problem where they don't appear.

Greg, I will update Safari if I can, but I might have an issue with the OS too. I'll check it out later.

I tried the Developer thing. Interestingly, no errors showed up at all.

Greg, I have the latest Safari version for my operating system (OS 10.6.8). Like Anna, I would have to upgrade to get the latest version of Safari.

I'm trying to get my hands on a Mac in your configuration. In the meantime, if there is something you can remember that makes it possible to pinpoint exactly when this started happening, please let me know. I might be able to tie the problems to a change I made.
