Finally, a hair goal!

Here are three sets of pictures:

-Bangs. I want my bangs to look like this. I posted this a while back but wasn't sure if my hair could do it, but now that I have stopped blowdrying for around 8 months(!), I think I can pull it off.
-Hair up. I would love to be able to pull off the so-called "urban romantic" look being shown here.
-Hair down. The moment I saw this Nordstrom model, I thought "that's it."

Does my Frankenstein-like vision work? I love these styles because they really speak to the "RATE" style that I prefer, and seem to be appropriate for my scraggly hair texture.

Also, I have never been very talented at putting my hair up without it looking sloppy and having most of it fall out over the course of the day. My hair is very, very slippery. Any tips or tricks?

I like it Maya! My hair slips from being up, too. If you can find rubber in teh hair accessory that helps it to grip. Bobby pins work too but I'm too un polished to deal with them ha ha.

I have similar hair to yours, although mine's not as nice and shiny! I swear by tons and tons of small black bobby pins, tucked under some hair to make them mostly invisible.

I like the updos. I think if you have problems with it falling down you could try adding some twists to it. Something like in this video from Binosusume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vnyu9iiv1fE

I'm guessing there are products that will help keep your hair from slipping, but I'll leave that to the ladies who know what they're talking about lol

Love the inspiration pictures Maya, I have used dry shampoo to create texture so my hair does not slip.

I second Mo on the bands with rubber in. My hair is slippy too. I found these bands which are covered but the rubber is exposed in small patches which keeps the band in

I LOVE these photos (thanks for posting them), but then that is pretty much the look I am shooting for myself for similar reasons. I am totally unable to make my hair look neat. I can't really wear it up, not because it slips but because it is so heavy it gives me a headache. I imagine hair spray would rough up your texture and keep it from slipping.

I really don't think that blow drying has long-term effects on hair texture except possibly for drying it out if not done properly.

ETA: In case that ramble wasn't clear, this looks like a good direction for you IMO.

It also removes too much moisture, which is bad for all hair but especially dry hair (and mine is dry). The drier my hair gets, the straighter it gets, so yes, blowdrying does have a long term effect on it. I also think thick hair is probably more resilient, and mine isn't thick.

The effects of blowdrying are pretty clear when you look at where i started vs. where I am now.

The tricky part about those two updos is that you can't see the actual device that holds the hair up. Obviously I can't tell from the pictures since I can't see the back, but it seems like it is probably hidden. I think the key is to be able to do it without a lot of visible clutter like pins, clips, and elastics. Tricky!

Not sure if this will work for your hair, because it needs to be pretty long, but my mom (who has fine straight Asian hair that is hard to keep up) wears her hair in a bun similar to the Asian woman on the left in the updo photo. My mom's version is much tighter and neater but it should be easy to mess it up a bit.

You start w/a ponytail, then pin the tail to your head above the pony with a big clip so that the hair is cascading down over both clip and the ponytail elastic, hiding both. Then tuck the ends underneath and pin it in place.

Don't know if that made any sense... I have no idea what this type of bun is called (to me, it's just my mom's hair!), otherwise I would look for a youtube tutorial...

Oh, and my mom swears that the best elastics to use are regular rubber bands, not hair elastics. I am skeptical though as I think it would rip out your hair when you try to remove it!

Diana, I totally get what you mean. I used to do that except without tucking the ends in. Does the clip show when she does it? That's my problem. My hair is fine and layered so I think I'd end up with a lot of gaps.

Maya I think these would look great on you! Love the Nordstrom's model hair photos. Not sure how much product you use, but a lot of hair looks somewhat matte so you may need to use some texture spray stuff to de-shine it (not hard, I have some which I use sometimes).

She uses this type of clip (apparently it's called a french clip) but in black so it matches her hair color, which I think helps disguise it.

Ah, I see. I thought you meant a claw clip. That looks more hide-able.

Yeah, the french clips are very flat on top which helps.

You'll have to see if you can use them though - when I had long hair, I was never able to use that type of clip because they pulled my hair too tight and made my scalp hurt. Claws were really the only type of hair clip I could wear comfortably and usually my hair would fall out of them after a couple of hours. I got tired of always wearing my hair down, which is one reason I went to shoulder-length hair.

Maya, are you going for long side bangs? Or shorter, choppier bangs?

This is basically what my hair looks like these days. My hair guy cut lots of choppy layers in it and I like it a lot. It's easy to maintain with a little mousse. But I switched to a sulphite-free shampoo and now my hair is really soft and flat. I have to use an iron to put curls in it.

If you want your hair to stay up you should try spraying your pins with hairspray. Also, giving your whole head a light misting of low-hold hairspray before you start working on the 'do will help it not be so slippery.

I am already sulfate free and it actually makes my hair wavier. Sulfates are ghastly and I will never use them again, on either my hair or my body.

I have to twist my hair to get any clips to stay, the bulge from the hair and the turn of the hair seems to keep most hairclips from sliding. I really like the non slip hair clips I've seen in Target and Harmons lately. I find freshly washed hair works best to clip up for me, if it's second day hair, it's too oily to clip anymore. Then I start braiding to get me through the day. Except I have to pull the braid really tight and get a headache by the end of the day. I've also noticed, if clip has no grips to it (either the elastic coated non slip type or some grooves or ridges to it such as teeth with a claw clip) then nothing will keep it in place in my hair. It's just too soft.

My mom used one of those hair doughnuts on me when I was little - and my super fine, super slippery hair stayed up fairly well.

and glue a strip of that grippy drawer liner stuff http://www.amazon.com/Grip-She.....B000KFSOFI to help them stay in. That's what I do to keep bows in DD's hair.

Without looking at the other comments I've never found anything to hold my hair in updos besides spiral clips. Goody calls them Spin Pins, but they charge an arm and a leg for them, but they are awesome for creating those updos with slippery hair!

Rae thank you I tried to google those earlier but just kept getting the same bridal hair accessories. Maya, I second Rae, those clips are really good. I had used them to secure a bun without the need for a ponytail.

Maybe I'm a doofus but how exactly do you use those spin pins?

My concern with hair rats and donuts is that I don't have enough hair to cover them. It's layered and fine. Of course they might be much smaller than I think, or I might just not know how to use them properly.

Can you tell I am new at this! I haven't put my hair up in years.

p.s. I want Reese Witherspoons craycray Valley of the Dolls hair from yesterday. Unfortunately I don't think I have the hairpieces necessary for it.

Diana - thanks for the description about your mom's hair. I wore my hair like that today (without neatly pinning it though) and I had no headache. woohoo!

I have the Goody spin pins. The way that I used them the most often (and most successfully) before I cut my hair was to do a ballerina bun. I would pull my hair into a ponytail, twist it and then circle it into a full bun. Then I'd take one spin-pin and screw it into the bun, along the line between scalp-hair and bun-hair, just to the right of the vertical midline of the bun, from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock. Then I'd take the other pin and screw it into the bun just to the left of the vertical midline of the bun, but this time from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock. Most days this gave me a bun secure enough to do jumping jacks in, which is pretty amazing.

Maya, I don't have hair that is slippery or fine, so I'm not of much help, except to say that I thought of exactly the same rubber bands Louise posted as being a possibility for you.

However, I wanted you to know that I tried Lisa's barrette trick twice in the past week and it worked really well both times. So to the extent that your updo requires you to put anything back in barrettes, definitely try it out. (And thanks Lisa!!)
