Festive skirt/tonal outfit - YouLookFab Forum

Hi all,
I ordered this skirt (my version of a festive skirt) as part of my holiday capsule. Can you help me decide whether to keep or return it? I am trying it with a few options from my closet here, not really styled, just threw it on. I've had the white sweater with pearls for years, but the other two are new. I have already decided to keep the burgundy sweater, I wore it with a different skirt yesterday. The saten shirt is almost a duplicate of a Zara shirt that I already own in navy and wear tons. So I know I am keeping that too. I am undecided about the skirt.

Pros:
- Not an investment piece, but a good enough quality for the price point.
- I like the color, goes well with the stuff I tried, and probably more stuff in my closet that I didn't try on (a white turtleneck sweater, the navy shirt I mentioned, a black crossover shirt, etc.)

Cons:
- I don't have any shoes that go with it. I've tried every single pair in my closet and this is the only one that looked remotely ok. I could wear black booties with when I am wearing black on top, but I really hope to make the tonal versions work this holiday season. I am not 100% convinced, and I am not planning to buy new shoes just to wear this skirt.

Gorgeous skirt. I would prefer it with knee high boots. A version of brown (cognac, light brown, dark brown) would be considered tonal as well. Brown is inside maroon, so same colour family. Do you have those Geox boots in your Collections?

What a beautiful skirt! I vote keep it. I like it with the brown booties, there is a sort of juxtaposition between the dressy skirt and the casual booties. I dare to suggest you to reconsider not buying new shoes - I think you would look fab in the white sweater and white pumps, like the ones of the model.

Star - Yes, I do. I am doubtful that they'd work. The skirt falls below my knee cap, and the boots are truly knee-height. There would be no room between them. The color might work, but not give the tonal effect, I am afraid. Still, I will give them a try.

I find the ankle boots are a bit casual for the pencil style of skirt. I have a loose leather skirt which is easier to style. I can dress it up with pumps but also go casual with ankle boots and sneakers. The burgundy colour is beautiful on you and the skirt fits well - so I am torn on this one.

Oh, Sisi, thanks. I can't do pumps anyway. I have a pair of light oxfords, but they weren't quite right either.

Bijou, yes, me too. If the boots were pointy-toe, maybe they would have worked better. I considered a skirt like the one you posted, but that is my worst silhouette.

Is the problem with pumps the high heel ? What about dressy pointy flats in a plum color? Sorry I do not want to give up that skirt flatters you so much.

Bella is it because the boots are a warm brown and the skirt is a cool burgundy, or are you wanting a monochromatic outfit? Did you watch the video SarahD8 posted regarding tonal outfits? There the vlogger (sorry I forget her full name) gave examples of tonal outfits that were quite an eye-opener for me. For example, red with burgundy accessories. Also I have no problem with no skin showing between the skirt and the boot, it may or may not work in certain cases, unless of course you have a poison eye for this. I kind of like the idea of your cream oxfords/loafers in my mind, an unexpected pairing, but if you say it didn't work, and yes, definitely not tonal.

Hmm, I love that skirt and think it looks great on you. Shoes would be a problem for me too - they have to look right to my eye. Do you have nude or tan boots or shoes? I do think black would work no matter the top. And love the idea of dressy flats, maybe in a color that works with other items in your closet so it doesn't feel like you are buying them just for the skirt.

I like the skirt with all the tops but not with these boots, I agree with Bijou, they look too casual. Would work better with flats or oxfords. If you can’t go tonal, go with black.

For me, personally, a new pair of shoes is money better spent than another top. Maybe this is an opportunity for you buy a new, dressy pair?

Love the skirt on you. Maybe try tights or leggings in the same or tonal color with the boots you are wearing.

I like Irina and Bonnie's ideas. I find that length of skirt difficult as well--unless you go full on casual with flat sneakers. I feel like you need to see ankle or have a fitted ankle for this below the knee style. Gorgeous color and pairings. I hope you can make it work.

I am with Bijou on this as well -- the skirt is fun and sounds like it would work with many of your tops. (Though, have you done the sit test/ walk test to see if that slit is comfortable for movement and also when you sit that you don't feel overly exposed with the slit?). But the footwear isn't working with it. So it's a question of a different skirt (as Bijou suggested) or different/ additional footwear, I suspect. Nodding with Kellygirl -- shoes that show the ankle would help a lot here...or higher shaft fitted boots/ booties.

I agree with the consensus so far. The skirt looks fab on you! But I don’t love these boots with it. Something fitted on the ankle or a more refined shape that reads less casual/sporty would really work much better with something as fitted and classic as a pencil skirt. I’d try the black booties that are fitted on the ankle (maybe with sheer black hosiery to soften the starkness of the black?) or your taller boots.

If you’re really not feeling those, and are determined not to buy more footwear to make the skirt work, I would vote keep looking for another skirt in maybe a different shape that may be a little easier to style.

Great skirt, but I think pencil plus slit is heading in a really dressy direction. Do you have any dressy flats?

I like the skirt too, Bella! Have you done the sit-down test with the slit? make sure you like the way it falls open when you stride too.

I was going to suggest a dressy flat too.

I vote return the skirt, unless you can make it work with what you have at home in terms of shoes, OR get a new pair of shoes. Something dressier and more refined.

Try them with your tall black boots and top first and show us!

I agree with everyone - the skirt is fab with the tops. But the boots don’t quite work.

Beautiful skirt, fit looks perfect and it's a lovely color. I like the top options you have paired with it too.

But I'm with others, that the footwear doesn't work. It sounds like you don't want to shop for a new shoe, so for that reason only I vote return. But if you change your mind, a dressy flat sounds like a nice option for the skirt!
