I love the old ones, my favorite is the original “Miracle on 34th Street”, I like the 1994 remake, but the original holds my heart. It’s heartwarming, and yet it reminds you of the reality of a nation not long out of the depression and WW2 (at least that’s how I see it). I also like “Holiday Affair” from 1949, which has a similar under current, but IMO is much more of a romance movie and less a statement on our society.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is a favorite but I kind of OD on it, so it’s been a few years since I’ve seen it.

Runcarla, thanks for your top picks! Love your Harry Potter and Lord of the Ring tradition. I will look for Arthur Christmas

Janet, great selections and discussion! Try Emmet Otter if you have a chance

Fabbers, since this post is on the second page I am unable to group multiple comments

judy, Will Ferrell is hilarious in Elf! My oldest son had quite a bit of The Snowman items too

Nikki, that's quite an honour for your neighbour! Julie Andrews is a legend.

I'll throw in another. Office Christmas Party with Jason Bateman.

Sal, I am a huge Kate Winslet fan

A favorite English cinema in town is playing all the favorite Christmas movies. My DD is going tomorrow to see Love Actually, and I hope to be able to catch Die Hard next Monday.

Bijou, that musical comedy with Will Ferrell looks like a must-see movie

kkards, I forgot about Miracle on 34th Street! Thanks for reminding me

Angie, the neighbors are new. She sings Christmas songs mostly and he sings Fleetwood Mac. Love Jennifer Aniston

anchie, that sounds like so much fun

A Christmas Carol with Alister Sim (1951) and It's A Wonderful Life.

Wait, what? No one mentioned The Year Without Santa Claus?
Heat Miser - he's my guy.

Jaime, you beat me to it! The Year Without a Santa Claus is by far my fave, although I'm more of a Snow Miser gal, myself! My second and third places go to the Bing Crosby Movies, White Christmas and Holiday Inn.

And I must respectfully disagree that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Dh and I have had this argument for YEARS! I am not saying it isn't a good movie, nor that it isn't nostalgic; it just isn't a holiday movie to me.

Fan of “Elf” and “Miracle on 34th Street” (the original). So many suggestions here…will have to check them out!

Echo—White Christmas & Holiday Inn, yes to both. And Christmas in Connecticut, which as I think about it is very contemporary-an influencer pretending to be someone they’re not, about to be outted (& in today’s world “cancelled”), lol. reminding us that there’s really nothing new, it’s just wrapped in different paper.

Fun discussion .Thanks for starting the conversation and to all who chimed in. Got some new ideas and was reminded of old favorites!!

So hard to pick favorites! A few family favorites that we'll wait to watch when the kids are home is Elf and Muppets' Christmas Carol. DH and I have been watching some Hallmark-type Christmas movies for a few weeks - they are really astonishingly bad! I had no idea

I enjoy Meet Me in St Louis at Christmas time, maybe not technically a Christmas movie but it does have "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" in it. Also the old cartoons that we used to watch as kids and some oldies like It's a Wonderful Life and The Bishop's Wife.

We enjoy watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Desk Set, and Bad Santa. Lots of other great suggestions here, too. Have fun watching Christmas movies.

Thanks, Style Fan! I watched this version of A Christmas Carol last night on Crackle

Thank you, Jaime for that! Will add to list

Thanks, Echo for the additions! I saw White Christmas in a theater a few years back and enjoyed it

Aquamarine and Indigoprint,

kkards, cool premise for Christmas in Connecticut

RobinF, thanks for the awesome suggestion of the Judy Garland film

Bonnie, glad you like watching Christmas movies too

Does Frozen count? That's the last cold related movie that I saw. And I liked Cool Runnings, saw that on Christmas a kazillion years ago. Not a Christmas movie but it's about the Jamaican bobsled team, so snow.
TBH it's so rare that I watch movies, and they're sci-fi or action movies when I do. I am definitely looking forward to the new Avatar movie

suntiger, Frozen is an excellent pick! Also a fan of Cool Runnings and sci-fi

I have to add DH's favorite Christmas movie - We're No Angels. With Humphrey Bogart and Peter Ustinov. Takes place during Christmas on Devil's Island - yes it's an oddball!

Suntiger, Cool Runnings makes me cry every time ... Such a great movie.

Thanks, Sloper! Love those oldies but goodies

Helena,
