Faux leather leggings for me?

I'm having a moment of weakness--would I look ridiculous in these? Would anybody care anyway? I used to be very critical of "mutton dressed as lamb" but it's a whole new different world now.

I had a pair of black leather pants around 1990 and didn't love them--think I gave them to my sister. I remember I also gave her a pair of expensive black suede pants. Just not my thing--too bulky, too stiff.

Now, decades later, I see this discussion about Spanx faux leather leggings, (machine washable), and I think maybe this looks like something I could wear under a skirt or dress to keep my legs warmer. I rarely wear skirts in winter weather nowadays--I feel the cold a lot more than I used to.

But I'm intrigued. How would I wear them? Would I look really stupid wearing them with a long cardigan or even a longer jacket or sweater.

Pretty soon I'm not going to be able to say I'm in my mid-70s anymore, assuming mid-70s has a six year span. Certainly Lyn Slater of Accidental Icon would wear them, but I'm not as adventurous as Lyn. I don't live in a big city, either. In the reviews of the Spanx, someone mentioned wearing silk long johns under them. Anyone tried this?

I'm thinking of next December trip to Chicago.

I am a solid YES. My single reservation is whether they will "breath" for you or not. I'll swing by later and see what others have to say on the subject.

Why not? If they are comfortable enough, go for it!

If you want a more breathable but still sleek/leather-ish, you could look at coated black denim or coated cotton pants.

If they are comfy l don’t see why not.My own personal preference would be to wear a longer top that covered my bottom,maybe a long white shirt with boyfriend cardi over the top,then white sneakers or shoe boots .l think it only moves into mutton territory if cropped tops and stilettos are involved!

Ms Maven, i'm 2 decades younger than you, and i've been asking myself the same question for 2 years....if i got them, i'd wear them with a long cardi belted at the waist, or a long knit top and blazer

I'm with KKards. I do have some faux leather leggings but I'm not wearing them this year. I'm preferring a looser fit now in a faux leather bottom - but as we all know, this is strictly a personal thing. If you want to try them, go for it! Word of warning though - the Spanx ones are extremely tight and body con. Good quality though, and are top sellers annually at one of the stores I work with in my sales life. I also like Cardiff Girl's styling suggestion .

I have a pair of Neiman Marcus leggings in my holding zone. The front is genuine leather and the back is regular leggings material. I love them, and hope I can tone up and slim down enough to wear them again. I think they add an interesting texture to an outfit, and I wore them frequently with longer tops and sweaters. The knit material on the backside allows the pants to "breathe" so I don't feel sweaty or suffocated in them.

I had a pair of AT Loft faux leather leggings with a knit on the back half, but I wound up passing them on because they were an ankle length, which looks odd [to me] on my longer legs. Also, they just didn't feel as nice on my body as my NM pair. I'm guessing this would have something to do with the "hand" of the materials used?

I don't think that our age matters. If we like the leather leggings, we should wear them.

Still not knowing if these would breath for you, I remain a YES. I think you would look smashing! Adventurous! Vibrant!

LisaP has a point though. My single experience with Spanx was that they were hard to get on! They were tight with a capital "T"! I might have ordered the wrong size. As for body con, what does it matter if you follow Cardiff Girl's and KKard's suggestions?

In full disclosure. Despite all the wide legged pants featured on the forum, I reaffirmed my love of the skinny silhouette. I just recently bought a pair of denim leggings that I adore.

Have I worn them to work? Yes, I have.
Did people look me up and down? Yes, they did.
Was I uncomfortable with that? Yes, I was.
Will I wear them again? YES, I will. But I will be amending the length of my top. In fact, I will be exactly coping KKards formula.

I think I still have my Spanx ones. I’ve only worn them a very few times — and with dresses, not tunics, since I don’t do tunics. They really end up looking more like tights that way and I’m not sure it’s the best look on my thick legs, but I’ve kept them just in case since they don’t take up much room. I see no reason why you shouldn’t wear them if they work with your wardrobe and appeal to you! I think they are beyond age if they’re styled in a sophisticated way, which I know you would.
