Fashionable PE Teacher??

Hello,

I am a PE/Health Teacher who has recently started focusing on upping my style quotient. Due to my job, I am not so sure how practical it may be. I was wondering if you all could give me a few suggestions. I usually wear khaki pants or jogging pants and t-shirts to work. If it is cold, I add a hooded sweatshirt. All the other teachers say they wish they could dress like me, and I look at them with wierd glances. If only I could have the opportunity they have to dress stylish. Anyhow, I pretty much have to wear some type of sneaker as it is not practical to wear anything else.

I don't like to wear shorts, so its either pants or crops. I am tall, (5'10) so I think I can pull off capris. I have no clue as to what type of shirt to wear. Any suggestions on stylish outfits??

Hi fitnessgurl26, and welcome!

So we'll need to to know a couple of things to help you. It would be great if you could post a photo, so we can tell your body type and what works for it.

Now, it's been a while since I was in school, so I am going to have to ask. Do you need to wear athletic gear? I mean, are you demonstrating certain sports/moves etc, running around? Or just telling people instructions? Or maybe some mixture of both depending on the day.

If you are doing sports, than obviously you should wear appropriate things ( running/yoga pants, tees -but make them fitted please etc), including supportive sneakers for the sport.

But if you have at least some days when you are not ( which I assume you do since you mention khakis), then I would go for some kind of cute yet stylish casual outfit. Are you allowed to wear jeans in the school? If yes, I'd pick a great fitting pair of super dark jeans, some fashion sneakers ( Pumas, Converse), some nice fitted knitted top ( an upgrade from tee shirt) and some kind of knitted jacket (hoodie upgrade) , Esprit does some cute ones, here's an example:

If jeans are not allowed, then do micro check pants instead. Later you can maybe start introducing cute casual jackets, like denim jacket with micro check pants or cord jacket with jeans etc.

I think the world of exercise and fitness has its own requirements, and wearing the proper gear is more important than anything else. How about some clamdiggers?

This might be one the one area of your life that isn't the most stylish. Some people have to wear scrubs or uniforms to work and this is a similar situation. But you can still always look great outside of work, and do your best while you're there. Some yoga gear shops have cute things. Maybe look into that?

Aside from that, even if you can't dress as stylishly as you would like to, you can still always keep your face, hair, and skin looking good.

So happy that you posted this question. I am always surprised at the way my kids' gym teachers are dressing. Really sloppy long sweat pants and huge hoodies. I worked with a gym teacher who had it all together and looked great everyday. She had to wear gear everyday, but made it look as good as she could. In the winter she wore coordinated sweats that fit (but not too tight) with fitted tees or turtlenecks. As the weather warmed up she wore walking shorts in casual fabrics with a fitted, collared shirt. Tops often had the school logo. She had very cool gear-type shoes. She wore makeup and did her hair everyday.
BTW...she took every possible opportunity (like teacher workdays) to dress in more stylish clothes!

Tanya- I can post some pictures when I get home. I can give you an idea of my body type though. I am tall (5'10) very leggy. I have about a 36-37" inseam. I am triangle/Pear shaped. My hips are very wide and I have a smallish waist in comparison. I also have an ample bottom. My measurements are like 36-33-43.
As far as what I can wear. I can pretty much get away with anything. I don't usually show too much instruction because it is a middle school. We only really have to show the activity once. I am also a coach, so I am standing and moving around the gym, but not really doing much exercise.
We can wear jeans on Fridays. I would like to stay away from sweats, if possible. I also like the idea of purchasing some cool "gear" shoes.

My biggest issue is what kind of knit tops to wear? I am not a fan of the collared shirts with the school logo on it because it looks a tad "butch" (for lack of a better term). I would like to look as feminine as possible.

Maya-I am thinking I might have to accept that this won't be the most fashionable part of my life...but I am definitely upping the ante on the wekends and during the summer, when I am out of school!

Chelle-It is nice to think that a PE teacher made an effort to look as best as she could. I agree, I get tired of seeing PE/Athletic people in oversized sweats! I want to stay away from sweats and jogging suits.
