Fashion Tape

Talk to me about fashion tape. Does it work on all kinds of fabrics? I have a couple of blouses that get infrequent wear because I need a camisole underneath. Sometimes I do not like the extra layer and it seems to me that fashion tape could be a solution to temporarily close a too-low neckline. Also, I recently tried on a wrap blouse but ultimately walked away because of the fussiness factor with making sure it stayed wrapped. Would fashion tape work for something like that?

I have that tape and I find it works for small fixes like keeping buttons closed on a silky blouse, but not on heavier items, like to keep leather lapels in place on a drapy or moto jacket. It would work for light knits and wovens. Otherwise, I prefer a discreet stitch or two, because it's less fussing.

Hmm well I finally gave in and forked over the $12 it costs for a roll of fashion tape here. (I had resisted for a long time because my daughter told me it was the same thing as the double-sided tape that came with her window blinds--but we gave up looking for where she had stored it.)

Anyway, so far I have used it twice, both times to close the gap between buttons where a shirt gapes just a week bit over the bust. So not a lot of strain, really. And both times, it kept popping open anyway. So I wouldn't be too confident in it working to hold together a spot that was not MEANT to be held together in the design of the item.

On the other hand, I got the regular "flash tape" that is OK to use on skin too (not that I have any garments that would require it...) and there was also a heavy duty version that you aren't supposed to use on skin.

I used some double sided tape from La Senza (Canadian Lingerie store) in a pinch once when I needed but did not have a strapless bra. I tucked the straps of a regular bra into the moulded cups, taped the bra to myself, and taped my dress to the bra. Everything stayed put all night at a wedding and I don't recall that it hurt the fabric of the bra (lacy) or dress (some cotton sateen blend). Left red marks on my skin, though

For button gaps and too-low necklines I have given up on fashion tape (unless the fabric is very light and the gap is very slight) and use little safety pins. I do, however, love fashion tape for the following uses: Securing a too-long belt end, temporary hem repair, and securing a wayward lapel that doesn't want to lie flat. So I think it's worth having a small stash.

I've heard toupee tape can be used in place of fashion tape and might be a little more heavy duty.

Hmm, so mostly I use fashion tape to tape my clothing to myself, and not to other clothing. I prefer a stitch or a safety pin for pinning fabric to itself as it's more durable; I usually carry a safety pin or two on my keyring for emergencies.

I like fashion tape for taping a neckline that's falling open to my chest (or to my bra sometimes), and for taping my footies to my feet when I'm wearing certain pairs of footie-eating shoes (seriously this is the best use for it; I've even used scotch tape in desperation).

I use fashion tape to alter gaping blouses and necklines that fall open more than I'd like. It works like a charm if the fabric is lightweight. And like MaryK, I've found it useful when taming long belts, lapels, and for emergency hem repair. I keep a little tin of it in my purse at all times.

This is a great thread. Sometimes I wonder if the reason models always look so flawless is due to some well-placed fashion tape!

I've never used fashion tape, but I just wanted to let you know that I actually saw it in my local SuperTarget. So if you have a SuperTarget nearby, you could maybe check the tape out in person before buying. I don't remember what the cost was.

I had a friend in college who used to be a pageant queen. She called fashion tape "butt tape"--the gals would use the tape on their rear ends to keep their swimsuits from riding up.

For those of you who use the tape to secure a long belt end, does the tape leave a mark on the belt if it is leather?

I've used fashion tape for all the purposes Maryk mentioned. Like Jewell I keep a tin in my purse. Once hemmed a pair of drapey, boot cut navy linen pants that I found on sale at Zara in Aix-en-Provence. I was on vacation and wanted to wear them with right away with flats. One year later, temp hems were going strong. On belts, the tape left a mark on both sides of a JCrew leopard print hair calf belt, and on the inside (the underside of the long tail) of a Kors leather belt -- where the leather is not polished.
