1) Late 90s/early 2000s office wear did not help me evolve my fashion style (Spotlight)

2) If you have a simple wardrobe making an effort with hair and makeup is a cheap way to lift every look (Brooklyn)

3) A signature look is very powerful (Rey - Star Wars VII)

What fashion lessons have you learnt from films?

I recommend these three films - all very different - but all compelling and moving.

Ha! Weirdly (for me), I happened to have seen all three movies.

1. I noticed also how there was no fashion in Spotlight. I was kind of glad. These are reporters, always running around town, chasing stories. Luckily their jobs didn't get glammed up for a movie.

2. The main character (Eilis?) was a girl with a very basic salary and position. Her wardrobe did not change a whole lot in the film (as I remember) but it was her growing confidence and self-possession that really brought about her transformation.

3. Rey's outfit is killer to the power of killer for me. That is all.

These are my only three this summer Mochi, although I am off tomorrow to see Room which I am unsure about - I have read the book.

Yes I agree re Eilis-she found out what she really wanted, and she expressed part of that through her clothing, hair and makeup. It made me reflect on how we shop more/own more than in the 1950s, but take less time on presentation (big generalisation here).

And Spotlight reminded me of a few offices where I spent time, lots of paper, bad coffee and very little fashion. I thought they nailed the atmosphere brilliantly.

Ive seen almost all the nominated films this year, which is pretty exciting. DH and I love the movies! Here are some more fashion tips from the big screen.

The Big Short: It's easy to overdo the spray tan. (Ryan Gosling)
45 Years: Always have a simple sophisticated party dress on hand, no matter what your age. (Charlotte Rampling)
Steve Jobs: Avoid the little neck tie, and wait for the next decade. (Kate Winslet, who was fabulous.)
Bridge of Spies: A matching tweed coat and dress set is incredibly charming. (Amy Ryan)
Inside Out: Have fun with your hair. (Joy, aka Amy Poehler)

I hope you like Room. Pretty intense ... not my favorite of the year, but worth seeing.

Thanks for playing along Viva!!

I want to see The Big Short and Bridge of Spies, and of course I have seen Inside Out (loved this, so much fun).

Being Southern Hemisphere it sometimes seems a shame to head to the movies in mid summer, but it is a good season. In March we have a French Film Festival and in September the International Film Festival - I always try and get to a few during these patches too.

The Big Short was really, really good. I was surprised by how much I liked it. It was well-directed and quite provocative. I expected to just hate everyone in it but it wasn't that simple. Really excellent.

I've been watching more tv than movies lately but let's see...

The Force Awakens - clothing is as much symbolism and tribal identity as protective garb (Finn switching from his storm trooper armor to wearing Poe's jacket).

Mad Max Fury Road - RATE is low maintenance, and leather is timeless as physical and psychological armor. Also, from Furiosa: play up your eyes and you can say a lot with just a look and few words.

The Martian - dress appropriately for the elements/weather, and um repair any rips PDQ

movies I still want to see at least partly (or mostly) for the costumes: Crimson Peak, Carol, Hail Caesar.

Thanks Rabbit. I would like to catch the Martian at some point....my fashion expectations are pretty low from the film though..

I want to see Carol - not quite here yet.

There definitelyare films and tv shows that I love for the fashion as much as the plot or acting...The Philadephia Story, The Talented Mr Ripley, Rear Window - off the top of my head.

Oh, Hail Caesar was so good! (I love the Coens: Nothing beats O Brother Where Art Thou, in my book.)

Well, I can't remember anything from recent movies but I remember some some character styles that make a impression:

Harry Potter, first look at Belatrix (H. Bonham Carter): Nothing says crazy like a bad hair day.

To have and have not (seeing L. Bacall for the first time): doesn't matter what you wear, but how you wear.

Devil wears Prada (about Anne Hathaway character): looking like a clueless idiot to show you are smart and don't care about your cloths still makes you look like a clueless idiot

Oh yes! You know how to whistle don't you Steve? Perfect.
The only recent film I have seen is The Martian. And I agree with Rabbit's assessment of the fashion.
For older movies (much older!), I love everything Grace Kelly wears in Rear Window and To Catch a Thief, Kim Novak's wardrobe in Vertigo and Audrey's in Sabrina. So elegant.

Forgot to say the things I learned about fashion/style:
Rear Window: 1950s full skirts were not the ideal attire for climbing walls and breaking into apartments.
Vertigo: changing your hair colour and eyebrows is not going to fool anyone into thinking you are not beautiful if you look like Kim Novak.
Sabrina: Givenchy design is timeless.

Hehe, Brooklyn - I had the opposite takeaway from Rear Window: 1950s full skirts work just fine for climbing walls and breaking into apartments. A lot better than 1950s pencil skirts, for sure!

I saw The Lady In The Van today. My fashion takeaway...grooming and cleanliness trumps all. Also, layering doesn't solve every style problem.

I haven't got much inspiration from recent movies even though I loved brooklyn and star wars.
1.I saw diane keaton in five floors up last year and admired the individuality of the clothes and thought "a signature style is good"
2. It's funny where you get inspiration. I once went to an animation"wreck it Ralph "with my son and husband and the only thing I got out of it was inspiration for a new hairstyle. My husband couldn't believe I managed to get the hairdresser to copy the style ofor a cartoon character.
