Fashion hack: avoiding cropped styles by buying the tall size?

I'm thinking it may broaden my pants sampling pool if I stop fighting the crop movement... would it work to cheat and get cropped pants in the tall inseam? Or would the hips and knees be placed all out of whack? I know the best way to find out is to try it, but many stores don't keep their petite and tall items in store, and I'm getting weary of all my returns...

Great question - I'm considering this myself with trousers in general as the regular lengths always feel just a tad too short for me. I hadn't considered that the other bits would be out of whack.

Cropped trousers seem to be all the rage over here in the Spring collections - I'm not sure they do a lot for me!

Tall sizes generally have a longer waistline and knee positioning, e.g., http://www.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=48054.

So they might be a bit of a different fit than you would with regular pants. But I think it's worth a try.

There's a difference between "tall" and "long" from what I understand from the pant-buyer at Eddie Bauer. Tall sizes are proportionally longer in the rise while Long sizes are the same as regular but with longer inseams. So look for Longs and avoid the Talls and you will be able to get the length you are looking for.

Do you have a few hours to get to some stores in person? That way you could try on several dozen pairs and avoid costly and time consuming returns. I knowww how you feel, I am all about Team Online, but sometimes it is just unavoidable if you are looking for something really specific.

Yikes, thanks everyone for mentioning the rise issue! I did not consider that, and it would be a big issue for me.

Rita, I wish! Most places I've looked, like J. Crew, only have their tall sizes online or by catalogue. :T

I'm going to email some stores and ask about this... everyone mentions that the petites are scaled down in the shoulders and torso, but similar details are not provided for the tall sizes.

I am someone with a long inseam but a take a relatively short front rise--- I haven't had any issues buying "tall" sized pants. Then again, I don't usually go for high-waisted styles.

If you are looking for a pair of "slouchy" type pants I'd figure that those are going to be less sensitive to where your knees are. I could be wrong though. I've spent years having to say no to pants because I don't want them to look cropped on me-- and these were regular length pants! Ha ha!

I've done that before (I'm 5' 6"), and it's worked out well for me. I haven't noticed a huge difference in the rise, but a longer rise is good for me, anyway.

Some brands seem to have a longer rise and place the knees lower, but some don't. I know that Eddie Bauer has a fit of their jeans which is just called long, not tall - the longer inseam but not a longer rise/waist. I have a short rise for my height so quite often tall pants are too high in the rise for me, more's the pity.

J. Crew got back to me, and they said the rise remains the same on the Tall styles. Now I just need to get to J. Crew and try some things on - yay for quick email responses!

I've not done it for pants, although I've considered it - like Jane says, here in the UK, cropped trousers are *everywhere* ... I have a long rise anyway, so it may work.

I did order a dress, that was supposed to be shorter than I would want (5-6 inches above the knee) in a tall - so it hit me mid-knee - the length was pretty much perfect. So that worked well for me, I would do it again.

Crotches are sometimes longer as well as the overall fit on the hips being a little roomier. But sometimes it's just the length that's longer. I guess you'll have to take your chances!
