Fashion Era Challenge: 50s, ladies semi-formal and junior department

I did two from this decade. The first involved a wedding party dress I wore once and a silk pashmina shawl as a shrug. Pointy toed pumps and my grandmothers faux pearls. Also an attempt at Eisenhower era hair, lol.

The second is her younger sister practicing for the sock hop as I try to remember how to swing (west coast? east coast?). I think my sweater is not quite tight enough for the era. I'm pretending my oxfords are saddle shoes. Also were pearls on teens only for formal dances and school portraits?

WOW. You've upgraded your very high Fashion Era Challenge entries by including family renditions. AMAZING. And of course - killer to the power of killer.

Look at you in that second outfit doing the jitterbug. LOVE. I like the little socks with the oxfords too. An adorable touch. You would look 100% at home wearing that outfit in Tokyo - especially in Harajuku.

(I am going to be very disappointed if you skip the '80s, Rabbit. PLEASE do an '80s story too).

I can't believe that you've captured the essence of the era, through family generations so well. WOW! The way you styled your hair, the fabrications, the stance, the shoes! Amazing.

Look 1 is so elegant. You are gorgeous in the dress. And look 2 is totally fun. I noticed how the oxfords took on the saddle-shoe vibe with this treatment. Nicely done! Yes, your sweater might need to be tighter to be authentic, but it looks fantastic as is--the key, to me, is showing the waist. I think high-schoolers would have worn pearls--didn't they wear them in their yearbook photos, with the portrait collars? Or was that later?

Thanks Angie -- I ran out of light around the 70's doing the photos, but will try for the 80's for you on Saturday if I can chore swap with the photographer. I have some ideas! heh where is the mousse....

Keturah - the green dress is actually Jones New York and I got it at Macy's a couple of years ago funnily enough, it just looks retro.

Firecracker - good points, I think you are right about the pearls and the sweater -- I was thinking of my aunt's high school portrait - her hair was about the same length too.

The green dress is stunning on you. Amazing how the addition of the pashima makes it feel so much more 50s.

And the sock hop outfit is an absolute scream, and absolutely authentic enough to pass muster!

Such fun photographs! I love the green dress in #1. The sock hop outfit in #2 is so fun. I think the sweater would have been tighter (and the bra pointier) but this is a great look.

That is crazy! I would have sworn you stumbled across some real vintage gem in an estate sale, or purchased it from an Hollywood costumer. Macy's... wowzer. Great choice!
