Fashion and the times: Part 2

Another thing I've been wondering lately considering the economic downturn is how trends are affected. In the previous thread I mentioned that there apparently is an attitude that you don't need to dress as well. I'm wondering how the economy permeates to the designers. Will they have less money to pay designers for good designs? Or is it like art and there will always be someone coming up with good designs? Will the trends reflect the times? Is there a correlation with bright colors and lots of detail with good economic times versus muted colors and neutrals and streamlined styles with tougher times?

I wouldn't be surprised if stores will be stocking more neutrals and classic pieces and less of the trendy or extreme. I wonder if skirt lengths will fall as they have in the past during bad economic times. The designers may be more inspired to come up with beautiful classic fashions.
As a consumer, I'd want to spend my money on pieces I could wear in several ways and would not be too memorable to repeat fairly often.

I do think there are correlations with economic (and political) trends and fashion trends. I just read yesterday that designers are focusing on the color yellow for upcoming seasons because it's a cheerful color and might lift people's spirits during tough times.
Related to this, you tend to see more military inspired styles during times of war.

Interesting threads, Patience, thank you for bringing them up.

Several days ago I read an interview with a (Russian) fashion historian and in his opinion major style changes took place after wars. He mentioned how style changed radically after WWI (1920, 1930s)and WWII respectively (I don't remember the details he brought up). And how cultural and socioeconomic and even climate changes can affect what becomes popular.

I wonder how this economic downturn will influence style. Will things change radically? Right now it seems that almost all fashion eras are experiencing a revival of sorts (heh, I'm not phrasing this right, sorry guys). Styles from 1920s to 1980s are reinterpreted and are popular again, and I for one really appreciate this trend. I wonder what's next, though?

I think there will be less obviousness in the clothing. I know I'm not using the right term...but less bling. I think it has become out of fashion to wear your designer on the outside of your clothing. It's more fashionable to be green, and conscious of the needs of the rest of the world.

Less is more, I guess is what I'm trying to say.
