I think that everyone should have at least one pair of fantasy-life shoes, and a fantasy-life outfit or two. Even if you never leave the house wearing it...

I have, hanging in a closet somewhere, a one-shoulder, form-fitted Hawaiian dress. Handmade, bright blue and indigo, with hibiscus flowers. The fabric isn't very fancy, but the look is very 1940's-50's pin-up. But so far, I haven't been invited out to a luau anywhere in Atlanta since I bought it five years ago.

This is because one of my fantasy lives, is in Hawaii. I have never been to Hawaii, but when I walked in the door of the "Enchanted Tiki Room" at Walt Disney World, at the age of five, I knew immediately that one day, Hawaii and I were going to be together. Hawaii is my soulmate. It is an undercurrent of my life, that someday I am going to be there.

That dress hangs in my closet awaiting the day something Hawaiian happens.

Some time ago, my bf called to let me know he was on his way to my house. It was about a 30-minute drive. And he sounded very sad. A family member, who is terminally ill, had had a very bad day, and he lives in another country. Not so easy to hop in a car and visit. On top of that, it had been a stressful day at work for him. So when I hung up the phone, I thought for a minute, and I got out my fantasy dress. I did pin-up style makeup, put on a shell necklace and bracelet my baby sis had brought back from Hawaii, dug out some lounge lights (fake candles that change colors continuously), and put on what I call my 'Tiki Mix', of Hawaiian music and swing tunes that I have on my iPod.

When the bf walked in the door, he took one look at everything, and started LAUGHING. And that was that. We listened to tiki music, ate sandwiches, watched a comedy movie, and overall, it was just a lot of fun. He was in a much better frame of mind with things.

That is the only time I have ever worn that dress. It is going to stay in my closet until the day it falls apart. I have never walked outside wearing it, but I guess my point is, I feel strongly that fantasy clothes do have a purpose - they allow us to dream. Even if you do your dreaming around the house, watching TV or cleaning the kitchen sink wearing it.

What is your fantasy-life outfit? Do you own it already, or do you gaze at it online or in a magazine, and dream?

(I am listing this post under inspiration, because the thought of fantasy clothes and fantasy shoes, inspires me. )

i don't own my fantasy outfit, but it would be a beautiful evening dress. I have never worn or owned a full length gown in my life, apart from my wedding dress of course. I dream of going to an amazing ball in a room with crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and all the men in tux suits too.

That's such a great story, please post the dress. My fantasy life pants are the tartans I posted on the orphan challenge. I play a game with myself where I choose my clothes based on having to run from zombies. In real life, I may have to chase down my escape artist dogs.

I have a giant silver ball skirt. I have actually worn it twice, once in college to a spring formal (I was overdressed but who cares? Plus my roommate and I had both bought the skirt (hers was gold) and we both wore them.) and once a few years later to a black tie wedding in Puerto Rico. It's sadly a little tight in the waist right now and I don't really have a great top for it, but it's still in my closet.

This is the only photo I can find of it right now, from the Puerto Rico wedding. Unfortunately you can't see the whole skirt, but my expression is hilarious!

I just bought what I consider a fantasy skirt. I probably won't wear out of the house, but I love it. It is just a plain maxi skirt that I could wear out if I wanted to mess around with proportions, but for now it is part of my really small "morning outfit capsule" while I get my family off to school & work for the day.

Don't know about a fantasy outfit, but Hawai'i is my soul-land too... We lived there for a while, and now go at least once a year t see friends and relax. In fact, I am leaving with DS tomorrow for a week of sun and pineapple. More than the incredibly lovely scenery and weather, it's the beautiful aloha culture - the warmth of the people, the ohana spirit, and the sense of being a community - that keep me going back. You MUST visit there soon - and if you need specific recommendations, I'm happy to do what I can!

What a wonderful story!

My fantasy is to be a villager off in the bush somewhere and wear an apron everyday. I have this long, sombre pinafore-like dress and colourful apron I got in northern China. It's really better than the mini-skirt-as-apron from my own *native* tradition (that would be hippy-dippy NoCal to all y'all who don't know ;>). My peeps don't quite do pretty...

My fantasy life dress in my closet right now is a black lace shift that is lined except for the sleeves. Semi fitted but not tight, with a scoop neck that is lower in the back than the front. Elegant sexy. From last winter WHBM, I just couldn't resist when it went on sale for $60 and the last one left was my size.

In my fantasy life I am gorgeous and can wear great shoes to go with it.

this is a lovely story... i did a red dress when my mum died and i have a friend who spent months of a touch and go pregnancy in bed w prada shoes... clothes have many wonderful roles dont they...

I agree about having a fantasy outfit, or at least an item of clothing, in your closet. I'm thinking that would be a pretty awesome party theme, actually. "Come dressed as your fantasy life!"

I have so many items of clothing that are essentially costume pieces that I don't need to be convinced. Actually, one of the reasons I attend science fiction conventions is just so I can dress up however I want.

My fantasty life outfit would be a full blown female version of a tux. Something sleek, androgynous but sexy, timeless and classic. To wear in place of an evening gown.

Oh I love your story! the dress sounds fab. Would love to see a photo! I recommend a trip to hawaii one day, it is a lovely place.

I am actually throwing a "Luau" birthday party for the Mr this weekend! Pretty good chance it will rain, but with all the flowers, Hawaiian food & drinks I dont think anyone will mind much. He has had a very difficult year, and since he loves everything Hawaiian, I hope it will bring on the cheer like your night!

Oh La Belle, we were in synchrony today. I was also thinking about 'clothes for an dream lifestyle because of the kimono style jackets and was actually thinking about making a post about it.
Your story is so sweet, you really were very attuned to your bf emotional turmoil and what could make him feel better.
I don't have a fantasy life outfit per say but sometimes I buy a dress or put together an outfit and think 'this would be nice to take to the theater' and the idea keeps in my head until I make actual plans to go to the theater because , after all, I already have the outfit.
My fantasy clothes are more like self fulfilled prophecies.

My fantasy dress hangs in the spare bedroom closet. A black party dress from the fifties. Black velvet bust with double spaghetti straps. Form fitting from under the bust to knee with rows of black fringe.

My mother wore it to real parties in the 50's and 60's. She loaned it out to someone, and that person shortened it! My mother never wore it again, and gave it to me when I was a teen.

I wore it in grade 12 and again at uni for Holloween as a 'flapper' dress with velvet headband and rhinestone pin, etc. In my 20's I wore it to a swanky New Year's party. It is a size 6 and I have been an 8/10 for the past 25 yrs, so I don't think I'll be wearing it again.

Maybe it's time for a new fantasy outfit?

My Bf wore a dress that sounds very similar to the one you describe to a summer daytime wedding. She made it herself and it was very bold and colourful and she is very bosomy and curvy and it was great. Are you sure you cant find somewhere to wear it? Bring your fantasy and your real life closer together? It doesnt have to be a luau.

I'm not sure what my fantasy life outfit would be! I need to think about that a bit. I am sure it would involve a lot of silk.
