Falling for Madewell, or: Style Rut?

Madewell's new spring line has a tagline: Cool. Sexy. Tomboy. And so many of the pieces really, really speak to me. I adore the beachy/on the road/laidback vibe and the potential also to use some of the pieces in more dressed up killer ways (that leather vest!).

But part of me wonders if this is all just more of the same for me -- and if it is, if that is okay? Where is the line between embracing your style on the one hand, and feeling uninventive on the other?

I think it all depends on how YOU feel about it. More of the same is more than ok if it's what you want and it makes you happy. I am finding I am becoming more narrow in terms of what I wear and for me that's hopefully a sign of a more defined style, and that makes me happy and is a true reflection of me:)

Are you bored with your style? Do you want to move in another direction? If these pieces speak to you, I wouldn't call it a rut. If anything, I think you have a well-defined style that suits you, Viva. You own your look.

I think it's only a rut if you feel constrained by it. It's super to have a place that gets you, style-wise!

this is so interesting and it's connected to what I've been talking about in my today's post.
Ceit said it all. If it's a rut you don't feel weel.
I've been living in jeans/pants + white shirt and I'm loving.
So if you feel good with it you may have found your signature style

I agree with Ceit. I've been casting the style net fairly wide in recent years, but lately I am pulling back into silhouettes, colors, and styles that I connect with more deeply regardless of trend. I say if it speaks to you, go with it!

Rute, it's so interesting. I saw and commented on your post this morning, and I didn't even make the (obvious) link between your thoughts and my own. What I saw in your post was a positive -- streamlining to a look that feels most like you -- and what I saw in myself was potentially a negative: a lack of creativity. Thanks for reflecting that back to me. Quite enlightening.

Viva - this is the crux between and signature look. If you love it and feel great it's a signature. This is "you" If you are bored or buying the famiiliar by default it's a rut. Sounds like these things would be loved. If I hear you right, I'm thinking this is your current signature!! Enjoy! PS stunning vest!

Go try it on at Madewell. If this is the style sensibility of the next leg of your style journey - run with it. Things that aren't broken, don't need fixing.

Viva, I just put a whole bunch of those on a wishlist (that leather vest!)... Also drapey linen tees. I too was drawn to that tomboy description. And you know what? I'm good with that - it helps me feel settled in my style that I can identify what I love AND what will work in my closet these days. Go for it!

Una - so funny. Rae's recent post about the linen tee sent me to Madewell (although I already know and love the brand) - and I have a white linen tee in the basket because of her. But of course I saw that tagline and had to venture in. And I have since been going back every day to visit everything. I'm going to be near a Madewell this weekend so I think I am going to do some trying on. Probably will hold out for some kind of promo before jumping on the vest tho, but I will be checking frequently.

Thanks for the support about sticking with a style. I find so many things appealing and interesting but only a narrow band of things interesting FOR ME.
