I have facials about twice a year and these are some of the things I've learned....
The first thing is to look for a spa and esthetician you can trust. Do you go for pedicures or manicures at a spa? Then they usually have someone on staff who also does facials, and you can start by asking them some questions. If not, it's best to ask friends and family where they go (ask the women with great skin - it's a good start!), and then go to those places to ask questions about their facials. To me, no one should be touching your skin without looking at it first and having an honest conversation about how you care for it, etc.
The best facials I've had over the years have been with estheticians who work in very small spas (or even work out of their homes!), who have come highly recommended, and who have always taken the time, even when I'm a regular, to speak with me first about changes in my skin and skin care routine. My current esthetician always has this conversation with me and has a set of facials she offers, but the facial I end up having is always a combination of whatever she feels is necessary based on the way my skin looks.
If you find the right esthetician, you don't have to worry about knowing what type of facial to ask for, they will guide you through the process and choose the right one. It can take time to find someone you trust, but it's worth it in the end. The skin on our faces is very sensitive and deserving of the investment!
