Fab perception discrepancy

I've never felt sure about this dress. Yet it is hands down my most complimented piece of clothing and I don't know why!

Material is black with lavender dots. Pic 3 is dress styled as a skirt with cardi and scarf.

What do you think of the dress on me? Do you have any pieces that the world seems to like quite a bit better than you do?

I see why you get compliments on it. It fits you very well and accentuates your figure. Plain and simple, you just look good.

What doesn't appeal to you about it?

Adelfa, this dress is lovely on you. What I see about it is that it is "mainstream" in the sense that it seems like a piece that will appeal to a lot of people because it is not wild, edgy, or out there - it's a pretty dress that fits well in a great color. Does that make sense? You may want it to be more __________ (funky/avant-garde/unique)? Still, it is rare to find a well-fitting all purpose dress!

My initial thoughts on why I don't like the dress much is that as an apple, I'm uncomfortable with defining my waist this much. Secondly, I just don't wear flared skirts. I wear straight skirts, and I'll accept pleats or gathers in a skirt if the material is super thin and falls straight down.

Una and rachylou, I think you're on to something. I'm uncomfortable with the combination of traditional styling and conservative pattern. If the polka dots were only bigger I think it might be better. I feel very straight-laced in this dress (though it is super comfy). Not me!

Talk about practical though. Machine wash and dryable, comes out of the suitcase without a wrinkle, and is good for days when I don't want to think much. And I know everyone else thinks I look good, which on some days can be a comfort!

I think the waist definition and flared skirt are suggesting an hourglass. Do you feel too busty? You look great. Sounds like a practical dress even if it doesn't have full happiness factor.

It fits you well, it is pretty, and it's comfortable (so you may look easier in your skin when you wear it.) Also, it has that retro flair that many people find...how to say this...reassuring in a woman? It's feminine.

But if your own style goals are not in that direction and it doesn't feel fab, then I say, find yourself a dress that's just as comfortable yet also feels more like "you."

Sorry, I've been gone for awhile, I am not so familiar with your style goals, but I did just go take a quick look at your recent WiW's to get an idea. I think this dress is flattering to your figure, but I fear it's too "cutesy" and not as polished and sophisticated as you are.
For me, it's those poofy sleeves combined with the polka dot print.

However, you can absolutely wear a more waist-defining dress with a flare skirt - I see NO apple here!

I really like it with the sweater an scarf and boots. I agree hat it's likely the shape that's a little discomfiting to you - I never wear flared skirts any more either but some flared-skirt dresses look good on me, if you get my distinction. I think it has to do with proportion and where the waist falls in the dress relative to how it would fall in separates.

It looks good on you, but I agree it does not reflect your sophisticated style. I'd keep it as a placeholder until something better comes along.
