Warning: long and ranty! LOL

I have only started looking, but I am finding almost zero out there in terms of frames that look good on me that are something a little different from what I’ve worn in the past. I stopped in the shop where I get my eye checkups (scheduled in a couple of weeks), and maybe they don’t have the hugest selection, but I was thoroughly underwhelmed. There was one pair that had a nice shape but only came in purple or gold. Muted purple and muted gold, but still...no.

I’m feeling a bit like some sort of freak. A small head and face rule out many options right off the bat. And all of the styles without nose pads sit either too far down my nose or if I push them up too close to my eyes and hit my eyelashes. I need nose pads. So that rules out a huge number of options. Many frames are too large and/or sit too low, so that my eyes are too high up in the frames.

Too many of the really cool frames that I admire on others look overwhelming once I put them on. Once you factor in that I have largish features, dark eyebrows, am high contrast in coloring, wear earrings daily, have color in my hair and an asymmetrical haircut... well, bold glasses just seem like way too much going on. The photo here is really bad, but shows the best of a bad lot. These are the closest I came to something I like. So perhaps the lesson for me this time around is thinner, lighter, more subtle frames.

So I think I’m going to focus my search on quietly distinctive frames. I don’t want boring, but something simple that is not the first thing someone notices about me. I don’t even mind if the impression is more like I don’t wear glasses. I kind of hate wearing them anyway. It’s a shame I am not a good candidate for contact lenses much less LASIK (the closest thing I have to a phobia is about anyone or anything touching my eyes).
