Extremely wide pants + choker top: yay or nay?

I would love your honest opinion--please be candid.

This outfit was inspired by a Zara look. I got the top ("choker" cutout top) from Zara, and on the website it was styled with extremely wide flowy pants and a closed, pointy-toe shoe.

I have this pair of extremely wide flowy pants from maybe 5 or 6 years ago. I never wore it--got it as a gift and kept because I adore wide, flowy pants, but found these hard to style because they are wider than anything I've worn before.

PS 1: Sorry for the frizzy hair (bad hair day), messy background, and fuzzy pic.

PS 2: Also, when I bend my leg in the pics (so as to separate my two legs so you can see it's a pair of pants and not a skirt) the pants look like they are dragging on the floor, but they aren't. You can see the length in the sideways pic.

You look fab! Great outfit but then I am a fan of very wide flows pants too. I think the top works because it's fitted. Saw a similar outfit pinned from Net-a-Porter, similar bottom and shoe but top was slim, fitted black sleeveless t-neck. So there's structure.

I think you've chosen a top that complements the pants really well. To finish the outfit, maybe a cropped jacket and interesting accessories?

I've always really liked that style of pants and these fit you perfectly. Very flattering. I think the outfit works well. I am also curious how the pants would look with a more fluid top like a thin sweater. I have trouble styling wide pants too, so I have no idea if it would be good or not.

I live those! For a summery look I'd also try tucking in a lighter- colored T top. I find ballet or boatneck necklines and 3/4 sleeves help balance flowy pants.

Jenni NZ, it's a necklace with a golden girl that my parents gave me when my daughter was born. I didn't know the Runaway Girl pendants, just looked them up and they are adorable! Tho I hope my little one never runs away. I've been wearing this most days since she was born 6 years ago...

Greyscale, I was thinking the same, as I like flowy tops too. When I bought this, the store salesperson also gave me a couple of slightly loose tank tops to go with it, which looked beautiful. But the look was maybe too avant-garde for 2012. Maybe I'll try the pants with some of the tops I own and share pics here.

unfrumped, a ballet neckline sounds very interesting! I'd love to try that.

The Cat, I love the 70s in fashion, especially the silhouettes, so maybe that explains...

I was all set to "Nay" this look because of the picture in my head. But, WOW, you look great! It looks like a very chic jumpsuit, and it suits you very well. I love it!

tulle and viva, that's very nice to hear... <3 I am short (barely 5'3") and for this reason not always sure about wearing outfits like this. (Same for maxi skirts). But now that I'm 43 I figure life is too short to keep myself from wearing what I love.

Echo, that's interesting! There was a Nay vote (it was cast earlier today), which intrigues me. I'm all for constructive criticism. That's why I like this forum. Not sure I would walk around my colleagues and friends asking for their candid opinion on my clothes...

You look great, but need to be comfortable with this dramatic look.

Joy, I do feel surprisingly comfortable about wearing it. Much more so than when I got the pants five years ago. I think it's a combination of being over 40 now, and of fashion trends that are welcoming wider pants again.

I think my biggest concern at this point is whether I'll be tripping in the pants if I walk outside (esp. around stairs)! There's so much fabric that even when they are about a quarter inch off the ground, the extra fabric eventually flows, billows, and brushes the floor.

shevia, my hair was so frizzy that day! It has a life of its own. I'll try to remember to take a picture on a good hair day. The curls are my personality. The one time I got my hair blown straight in a salon, I felt so depressed, and some people didn't recognize me!

Went to the symphony today. This outfit would be perfect. Lots of wide black pants..
