Extreme booty confusion: what exactly makes them work with skirts

I'm about to escalate the booty hunt and would like to have something clarified before I do. My key criterion for a black booty is that it be able to work as well with skirts, dresses and skinnies as it would under boot cuts. Previous Angie posts suggest I should be looking for a style that's cut low and exposes the ankle bone while maintaining a low vamp. This sounds like a very tall order. Have I totally misinterpreted things? And even if I have, recent discussions here suggest the standards have changed a bit. If someone could describe what I should be looking for in tactile terms, I'd be most grateful

HA HA! I read "extreme booty" and thought you where having difficulty with an uneven hemline due to, well, extreme booty!

No advice on how to find a nice pair of booties.

Haa.. Me too. I was going to suggest an A-line.

I wear booties with my skirts when the leg and shoe line is unbroken with
matching tights
and a snug fit around the ankle...I guess more like a~ shootie~, because my ankle is exposed just a bit. some don't mind the fuller ankle on the booties, but on me they just look sloppy:(

Oh Michelle! I know *nothing* about booties and skirts but I have to pop in and give you a shout out for wanting to try this look. I love it, but it scares me to death. I think some ladies like the "shootie" (I hear a trademark calling your name, Taylor), but if I remember correctly from Angie's recent booty blog post, the gaping look is a good one, too. The shootie often looks to me like the booties I wore in the 80s/90s (lace-up, ankle hugging). The booties in Angie's post are more generous around the ankles.

Here's my suggestion: Buddy shop with a photographer who can post directly to YLF (and wear a skirt this day). That way you can receive direct feedback on what works.

I can't wait to see what you come up with! And maybe your courage will propel me into bootyland, too.

Michelle, I am still on the same hunt but at least I found one pair which works with skirts for me. These are Clarks Sweet Cone from YLF store. They are cut low in front which creates an illusion of lower vamp. I am pretty critical about my legs but I loved how they look on me. If you add to the mix low contrast tights or hose and at the knee or just above hemline you are in business.
I bought mine at Zappos Canada back in July.

Sveta, I don't think they restocked that pair of booties. I really wanted that one too!
My concern is about the full ankles. Trust me, my ankles don't need any further volume, nor do my calves. For this reason, am I right to shy away from more voluminous booty looks?

I wish I could help but I have the same problem figuring out the right look too, Michelle! The wider ankle booties look like boats on my feet with skirts; I love that chunky look on other people but it never seems to work in my mirror. I stick with the "shootie" look that Taylor mentioned.

I don't know, Michelle. I found that ankle boots which are snug around my ankles and come above them really look bad on me. They emphasize the thickness of my ankles and calves IMO. On the other hand I really like the look of slouchy boots on my legs which end above the ankles. I also want to try ones with wider opening: for some reason I think that when ankle boots have a wider opening than your ankle it makes your ankles look slimmer... just a theory, need run the tests!
But definitely try any bootie which ends below the ankle you can find - they may work well for you - I am looking too!

I think the volume might actually help *slim* the ankle. Oops- just noticed that's what our new grad student, Sveta just said. So, basically, I have nothing to add here.

I agree with Sveta about baggier booties slimming your ankles. It's almost as if your eyeball says "Oh, look how loose those are around her ankles- they must be tiny!" I also think a small heel looks better with skirts/dresses, and there is some other element that I can't quite name yet. I just recently found a pair of black booties that works with dresses/skirts and they have a small heel and a loose opening.

I have the Clark booties too. I'm no help, however, Michelle. I only wore my booties a couple of times last year, but I think Sveta's is right about matching the hose to your booties and keeping the hemline at or slightly above the knee. I have vowed to wear my loads more this year, so we shall see if I can keep this promise to myself!

Michelle, I've not found booties to work yet so can not be of help. Some heel seems to be key to wearing them with dresses/skirts, but they still look like either elf shoes or witch shoes on me. I suspect that an ankle-displaying booty will give you a longer leg line than one that comes above. Have you tried the Clarks Indigo Nottinghills from the YLF store? they have a low heel, show ankle and are adorable.

These Bare Traps look promising. The brand is usually very comfortable and they have a low heel and show the ankle. These have a chunky tapered black heel and a bit of brogue detailing and gathers or ruching on top of the foot. The toes turn up so don't know what that would look like.

I tried these last year and found them narrow but a simple classic look that can go casual or be dressed up. They also have a lower heel and show the ankle. The reviews are good, so others found them comfortable. They are a very inexpensive way to try the look:

I have the Clark's Turkish Blend (found in the YLF store) and they look great with skirts and dresses. I think it's because they have a heel and because they are sort of cut on the diagonal at the top. There's not a severe horizontal line cutting across the leg line.

Michelle, I can't help with the bootie question. I only wear mine under jeans and as someone with thick calves but thin ankles, I just don't think the look works for me (the last thing I want to do is hide the fact that my ankles are slimmer than my calves). I know a lot of people here love the look, so hopefully you will get great advice, but I personally find it to be a very difficult look to pull off.

I actually clicked on this thread because I thought you were talking about the size of someone's backside. I often think I have an extreme booty, so I was hoping you had some advice! (Also, I realize you probably use some kind of audio reader when you are reading posts, and that probably makes homophones really difficult for you. So just so you know, booties on your feet are spelled with an i e, while booty, also known as your backside, is spelled with a y.)

Michelle, I do wear booties with skirts, mine do not gape and come up to the ankle bone. I find this a nice look with pencil skirts or a lines which sit just above the knee. I have seen wide, non slouch boots work when balanced with much shorter hemlines, this look is quite grungey and young though. Good look in your search Michelle.
