Exploring the idea of 'Bookending'

Prior to joining YLF, I had never heard of the concept of 'bookending' as in shoes with hair, or scarf, or belt, etc. My first WIW have some pretty harsh and contrasting black shoes (not successful like the black footwear post examples of this morning's blog post.)

Below are recent aquisitions that let me play with bookending...

Boots (label is worn...Locall I think? Made in Portugal)
Rockport leather sneaks
Reiker shoe/ booties

I had never heard of bookending until YLF. It was quite a discovery! I'm still learning. I bookend my hair with taupe booties and snakeskin booties for the most part. I also bookend black -- but not with my hair. I do that with black in a pattern, or my black specs, or a black bag.

One frustrating issue is that as someone with lighter hair I find it difficult to bookend with that in the winter. That's because most bottoms and hose are dark. Yes, I have a white pair of jeans I can wear in winter...but quite honestly, I walk a lot -- and conditions don't really favour light pants. Yes, I could wear nude hose and a skirt...but that wouldn't keep me warm, either. So I need to figure out a way to do this.

Love your bookending pieces!

I bookend my hair a LOT - with cognac, burgundy, cherry red, and orange. Obviously it's not a 100% literal match most of the time, but I enjoy echoing the bright hue of my hair on my feet. I have red hair because the color makes me cheerful, and once Angie mentioned the concept of bookending to lend balance to our outfits, a light bulb went off. THAT'S why my cherry red pumps were such workhorses for years!

White or grey work well for me now with my hair. All the lovely browns don't work as easily as they used to.

Bookending was also among the many staring in my face yet unnoticed truths I learned at YLF. As a non-matcher by nature I really needed someone to point out and illustrate the aesthetic pleasure created by bookending. A revelation!

Until I joined YLF, I never knew it had a name. I always just thought it was pulling pieces together as I would for a room. Like, if there's blue in the carpet, use some blue in some throw pillows and accent pieces. Only, with clothes.

I love the effect on others, but I have medium-tone brown hair that doesn't really match the current browns. It's not as warm as cognac or luggage. I am actually considering dying my hair a redder tone to match some burgundy booties I have my eye on

I have medium brown hair with caramel highlights. Cognac is my all-time favorite bookend color, but I've also had good luck with taupe and gray, perhaps because the contrast sort of matches the level of contrast between my skin tone and hair color.

But seriously, cognac. It seems to work no matter what, even with colors I wouldn't expect it to match.

Bookending is a concept I learned a few years ago, and it has dramatically changed my style--for the better. Along with making you look more pulled together, you'll find your shoes and accessories to be a lot more versatile. Any color that matches or blends with your hair is going to work with any color you put with it--provided the color also enhances your eyes, lips and skin.

I had not heard of bookending either until YLF and it has made me understand why I always felt like I had to throw on a black jacket/cardigan with everything - - because I was wearing black shoes! I am starting to experiment with lighter colored shoes, but like Suz, I worry that this is not going to be always practical in the winter. I have found that having a black necklace, scarf, etc available helps. And of course the black jacket.

i'm still trying to figure this concept out. i'm expermenting with this one. i used to always try to match my shoes with my pants on the assumption that it created a "longer line", and made me look taller. (i my mind i'm 5'8, and i'm always confused when others don't recognize that)
