Evolution of style in a Covid-19 and quarantine world

I was wondering how will Covid-19 change style. Will there be a gravitation toward more subdued styles and color palettes or we will be looking for more glam and flamboyance? It could go either way, but I'll just continue SYC and DMOT.

I was thinking about this. When I’ve come home this week, my neighborhood has been swarming with walkers. Dogs and children are getting walks like they never have before, hahaha! Anyways, a lot of puffer vests, scarves, and hats...

I'm definitely schlubby tonight. Probably schlubby tomorrow, too. I'm too tired to care about feeling cute, and I'm struggling with some loneliness. Thank heaven for this place!

I've been seeing lots of gloves and masks coupled in the general public, and lots of vacant stares from co-workers who are just exhausted

When it is once again safe to be out in company with other folks, I’m going to see my hairstylist and aesthetician as soon as they can fit me in, and then I’m going to go shopping for a whole outfit, or maybe even a capsule - and I want it to be PRETTY, and I want it to be LIGHT or BRIGHT! Oh! And I need a new pair of jeans!

Right now I'm just wearing what I would usually wear at home to work (nothing fancy, just jeans and a sweater), but I know that as spring continues to approach I will start to crave lighter, brighter colors.

I ordered a bunch of stuff online from Nordy's today because one of the things I know I will want in the warmer weather is optical white jeans. My old pair is out of date and was donated last month. I'm also craving red in a big way!

I suspect that work from home jobs will stick around for a long time after this is over. Casual comfort on the bottom, Skype ready on top.
Work place codes may have to become even more casual. I hope not, but workers may demand it. I suspect that even more jobs will be part time.

Well, in some ways I feel like I've reverted to a younger version of myself, wearing a mix of gear and casual clothing so I can go outside with dog and kid at any time of day. My fleece quarter-zip, merino hoodie, and down vest are all getting lots of use so far.

That said, I also feel pretty conscious of my appearance -- and my house's -- during video conferences. I'm still doing my regular skin and hair routine, which is pretty minimal to begin with, but it ensures I always feel presentable and never schlubby. I'm wondering if we're going to see even more make-up styles oriented toward digital media than ever before.

I'm definitely tidying certain corners of my house so that I have a few designated spots that look nice and aren't too distracting during Zoom/Skype sessions. I'm suddenly very grateful for all my houseplants and artwork and bird-feeders, as it means my house is actually a pretty darn nice place to work!

Wondering same thing.
Very utilitarian when doing yard work— have things that just WORK so not looking to change- but would expand when able, to more or what works, durable, comfortable. Colors usually dark/ green for practicality, except for light colored sun- shirts.
But for lounge wear and casual-wear, I’m becoming more aware of trying to identify the most flattering fits that also meet comfort goals.
Am also very aware of the benefit of my “cold spring “ palette which includes kind of vivid orchid and fuchsia overlaps.

One thing I was also considering is moving a bunch of clothes I’m not likely to wear for awhile to a spare closet.

i read this interesting conversation the other day between Vanessa Friedman (fashion critic at the NYTimes) and Sapna Maheshwari (a business report at the paper). i was wondering the same thing as Venessa...will this lead us to swing back.....

Vanessa: I wonder whether at the end of this there is a big swing of the pendulum away from athleisure because MY LORD, WE WILL BE SO SICK OF LEGGINGS — will we have our own version of the New Look? — or whether sleepwear as workwear will become the new normal? What’s your bet?

It’s hard for me to predict how I will feel in a couple weeks, but getting dressed and putting on makeup makes me feel ready for my workday. It creates a foundation upon which I feel best able to perform the responsibilities of my profession. I suspect it’s similar to an actor/actress preparing for a their role by wearing a costume or uniform. The only changes I am making to my workday style are to wear brighter lip colors, be wary of jewelry that produces too much glare and to avoid patterns that are distracting.

I'm more bold with my style when I'm not at work. That's an interesting realization.

Yes, this is a very interesting question. I am hoping that the dramatic decrease in pollution and other environmental improvements will lead to some changes - but that is just one of those dreams that keep me going. I do think Joy is correct and work at home, tele-medicine, tele-everything will become much more popular.

Angie, you are absolutely correct. Hopefully, a quarantine of consumption can be replaced with a sense of being content with what we already have. I'm not talking about what we may have in our closets or on our backs.

I hope people will come back to brick and mortar retail stores for immediate clothes hunt and enjoy wearing lots of different outfits every day to compensate for all the quarantine boredom. Otherwise I'll be looking for another profession soon ( retail is my work place ).

In reality all things will change this year - not sure for better or worse.
I do expect people to become more independent from fashion trends and work requirements.

I really hope that more people will have the opportunity to work and do school from home from all this! I hope too for more contentment, and focus on family, health, and the things that matter- instead of activity for the sake of activity. It's time for rest.

I’m enjoying not having a lot of commitments. I've been wearing my everyday hiking pants, a tee and a sweatshirt every day. And good shoes for dog walking. It alternates between beautiful and sunny and snowy.

@Jenn Interesting point about fashionable masks - out here in Hong Kong, people still wear the protective masks on the inside but you can buy the outer washable ones in many styles & colours. Some even come with cute anime faces on the front (so it looks like you're always smiling or blushing). Fun!
