Everyday WIW, cowl confusion

It's suddenly rocketed into summer temps here but I'm still in jeans because I'm going to a hockey game tonight (go Sharks!). The top is newly thrifted and I never know how to layer over cowlnecks. I tried the sweater open but then I had no shape in the midsection at all. Feedback welcomed.

Cowl necks are indeed a little tricky to layer over, I agree. But this is more of a "baby" cowl (not overly large, I mean:-) and I think it looks fine as is with the cardigan. Love the combination of the black & white print top with the pink cardi, by the way. Have fun at the game, Laura!

Like Inge, I think this cowl works nicely with the cardigan. How does it look with just the middle buttons buttoned?

Thanks, y'all. Last time I posted a pic with the middle buttons only buttoned on a cardigan, people here thought it looked odd how it pulled... I think I am reasonably satisfied with the look as is; it just looked weird unbuttoned, too baggy.

I like your instinct to create a waist. I also love the pop of color in the sweater. I have also used a skinny belt with a cardigan open and over the untucked shirt to create a waist.

Love the strawberry color! I have better luck layering cowel necks with jackets than cardigans. They are tricky. A fitted jacket would give waist definition.

I wear cowls a lot and I've done the same thing as Day Vies. I'd probably wear this sweater with it entirely open (letting the open cardi create a column) because the sweater is cropped. With a regular cardi (neither cropped nor long), I would wear it with a belt underneath over the untucked top or button the middle buttons. Those shapes all work well on me, as someone with a broad rib cage and IT/apple tendencies.

I think it looks great! If I was wearing it thought I would be inclined to leave the cardigan open as I think the flow of the outfit would be very attractive.

No advice because I think it looks great as is. I love the fresh bright colour of the cardigan over the top. Have a great time at the game - I am a huge hockey fan.

I like it as you've styled it. Very pretty colors and silhouette on you! Personally, I might be fine with the cardi open, too; I used to have an aversion to wearing them open, but I've gotten so I can do it now sometimes. It may be more of a comfort thing than the actual appearance.
I love cowl necks of many types, and I layer over them for warmth. Pretend the cowl is a scarf, and wear toppers that you would pair with scarves. I could see this top with a longer v-neck cardigan, a flowy-type vest, or a jean jacket.
