Angie, I am a huge Esprit fan and I've been following their dress collection. I like quite a few, except most of them still don't provide enough coverage on top. Would you say they are not age-appropriate for mid-30s? I was considering these:

Thanks Angie! Well, you know I am kind of clueless about dresses. I'll probably wait before they go on sale. But it's funny, I almost bought that checked dress last weekend, I had to restrain myself I was thinking it would be a great tunic.

Not so clueless!

If the weather stays as beautiful as it has been, we'll be wearing frocks everyday. This is the BEST Spring I’ve seen in Seattle. AMAZING.

I can't believe it Angie!! I've been hemming and hawing over that exact same dress for the last two weeks. Can't decide if it will look good on me (and if it will be long enough, but hey, I have leggings now and my fab jeans;-)

Which dress is it you're looking at, Inge?

There are two I'm eyeing. One is a sure winner for me -- called "cute cotton empire style dress with flowers," and one is a little questionable, because it has a dropped waist -- "sporty cotton dress with stylish checks."

Sorry, I can't get the links to copy correctly, but both dresses are near the end of the page with casual dresses.

Should I go with the first dress or take a risk on the second one?

Inge, dear style twin, of course you would like the same dress that I do!

I would love to wear this dress with Cons and jeans as pictured, but to wear it over jeans brings up a sizing issue. Esprit runs small ... I am thinking of going with a size 6, but maybe even an 8.

Okay, I've had a look at the dresses you described Laura.

LOL, we were talking about the same one, why doesn't that surprise me?!

I hope Angie can give us some advice. A dropped waist is probably not my best look either, but this one is quite straight up and down, so I was wondering if I'd be able to pull it off. (I've never owned a checked dress, so that could be fun too).

I'm not so fond of the first one with the small pattern, there's something a little old-fashioned about it (at least to me).

I'm always a little surprised to read that Euro brands run small. I have the opposite experience. Over here Esprit and Mexx etc. usually run a tad larger (Zara and Mango have smaller sizes). I've no explanation for this...

Can you order both sizes and see if you actually do need the larger size for wearing it with jeans (I was wondering about the same thing).

Yes, I can see what you're saying about the floral dress. I like the shape of the dress much better than the pattern. The shape is a clear winner for my body type, but it's the second dress that I could see wearing to death, over leggings, over jeans, with boots, with Cons, with ballet flats ...

Awaiting Angie's verdict (fingers crossed).

Style quadruplets actually. The checked shirt dress is the dress I liked best and Marianne had her eye on it too! I LOVE this look. I have that item represented in my wardrobe already – it was all the rage in Barcelona last year and of course I had to get in on the action. I wore that piece over the weekend actually with skinnes and Swans. Felt fab.

The dropped waist is tricky. Can make you look short-legged and hippy. You know the drill. Just have to experiment.

Kristen, Esprit usually runs small so you might like to try a size up or two. Perhaps that makes your frock available?

Ooh, I like the grey cotton stretch sheath... it's in the Dressy section. But I also have my eye on this dress, which I'm hoping I can find time to try on soon:

... so I don't know if I need two! The ATL has the benefit of being petite, and I know I can fit into their stuff. Not so sure with Espirit, since I've never tried it. Angie, do you think that grey sheath would fit me? (I tried Club Monaco recently and the dresses were too long all over - does this brand fit similarly?)

I would like to add dresses that aren't black or brown!

I liked that checked dress a lot too, but it's too expensive for me. So is just about everything else. I shop exclusively in the outlet store!

Esprit is kind of all over the place in sizing in my experience. I have pants from them in a size 2, yet when I tried on jeans in a 2, I couldn't get them past my knees. I have also tried a few things on in a 0 there (I was thinner at the time, but not a lot).

Dropped waists used to look SO good on me because they would balance me out really well and make my legs look more proportionate, but no more In my experience you have to be very straight and slim on the bottom. I ended up giving away all the drop waisted styles I once owned. I thought about trying a DW Express top a while ago, but decided to pass. I just don't try on things anymore when I know they are going to disappoint. It has done wonders for my morale!

Oh, so many fans of that dress! Yes, Angie, the weather has been marvelous, and since I am home now, casual dresses would be very useful this summer. When I was working, I needed more layers because of AC in the office and it's also usually chilly during the morning commute. I was hoping Esprit won't have that many florals. That dark blue dress pattern is a little funkier but still quite sweet, so I am not sure.
Kristen and shiny, I also like those sheath dresses, but I don't have any use for them right now, unfortunately. And I second Maya - sizing varies quite a bit.

Inge, it’s all relative. Sizes at MNG and Zara are smaller than Esprit and Mexx for sure, but Mexx and Esprit run smaller than American AT, J.Crew, BR and the Loft.

Shiny, I hope you get that dress at the Loft. It’s GREAT.

Marianne, there are lots of plain dresses that I can see work for you. Why don’t you try those? (I've ordered the shirt dress. We’ll see what happens).

Maya, you actually don’t know whether stuff is going to disappoint until you try them out. This has been proved on this forum over and over again :0)

I did order the ATL dress (didn't have it in my local store) - it is just so perfect and I adore the color. I tend to have such good luck with ATL dresses I figured it was a safe bet. AND I ordered the espirit dress too. I'm dubious the espirit one will fit, but I just love the grey and the silhouette is perfect for me, so it is worth a shot even if I have to return it - especially since shipping was free.

Alright, I have to stop shopping now to save for the Nordie's July sale.... so please, whoever gets me for the challenge, don't require me to buy anything!!! Accessories only from here on out (but yeah, you can challenge me to buy another purse in a specific color... I want a new one but can't decide what color would make the most sense and be most versatile; and I don't count accessories towards my budget, within reason. )

ROFL, Shiny, yet more dresses that we both coveted. I had my eye on the grey sheath AND the Loft one. Too funny! I'll be eager to see how the Loft one looks; I didn't see it in the store when I stopped by tonight or I was planning on trying it on myself.

Angie, thanks for the heads-up on sizing but the casual one I liked was only left in 2 small sizes. And as much as I like the white sheath, I have nothing to really wear it for and I have. Enough. Dresses.

(If I say it enough times maybe I'll believe it. LOL!)

I still try things Angie! Otherwise I would have never come home with that ruffle top OR banded top OR the stirrup leggings I just ordered But sometimes I just know something isn't going to work, and drop waists are one of those things. And it's not like I haven't tried them! I did, and I loved them and actually had a few of them...but they didn't work on my "new" body so I gave them away, and so I'm not going to pretend I had the body I had 5 years ago and try them again, and be disappointed again. Since making this resolution I have been feeling so much better.

The dresses are adoreable and yes I would buy a few, but I'm being a good girl for now that is. Now Marianne age is just a number and if it looks good on you then wear it. I'm 44 and I'd wear one of those dresses. Go for it!!
