Epiphany --- for reals

Now I love style epiphanies. I even think I have new one brewing. But today is Epiphany, as in the final day of the Christmas season. Tonight we sang the carols we hadn't had a chance to sing and make our last batch of cookies. Of course, we also had healthy soup and a kale salad -- detox needs a boost!

Yes. my Christmas tree is still valiantly hanging on to see the season to its end, and it's been a blessing to have the bright twinkle of lights in the insane cold. Today the kids and I tested the "boiling water into snow toss." Crazy fun in -14F.

I've found my Holiday capsule both fun and practical, but now it's time to move on. I'll be making a trip to Indiana to help my mom post surgery (should be fine -- just repairing a herniated disc). I think I'll work on a minimal, casual travel capsule, since I'll be traveling by train. I do know that I'll make my new, slightly slouchy t-necks a part of the plan. I already had purple and red in my closet, but I added a lovely berry shade that still has tags, and a classic black (see pic 1). I'm also packing my newish black boots (pics 1,2, 3). They're not real leather. Still, they have a very real leather look (the shine is from the flash), they fit barelegged and over skinnies, due to the well-placed gussets in back, and have the slightly dressy riding boot details I was looking for. Bonus: They come naturally weatherproof, and I still have funds for a better pair if they turn up. The almond toe is comfy, but more refined than the pair they replace.

Here's to moving forward! Style epiphanies to come!

The new T-neck, the new boots, the skirt -- your HAIR -- everything is perfect.

I am an expert on train travel, and I hereby deem your wardrobe choices perfect. Casual...with a bit of polish, and removable (or addable) layers are the way to go.

I hope your mother will heal in short order, and I hope your trip is a good one.

And what was the result of your experiment?

Oh, winter....this is a brutal one, like the winters I recall from childhood. A "real" winter, in other words. Tall boots = smart purchase at times like these.

Suz: It does indeed turn to snow. The water must be just off the stove and the air very cold. Also, it seems some people have been burned while trying it. Needless to say, one show check the wind and toss the water away from oneself, not straight into the air. I, of course, filmed while DH handled the water!

What a great post. You look gorgeous in the black turtleneck and skirt outfit. The boots are so fab--great find! The skinny jeans are fantastic on you, too. Looks like a chic travel capsule in the making. To me, train travel is so civilized (if sometimes unpredictable), compared to flying.

True modern classic! You look fantastic. T-necks are great staples, but they must be the right ones, like yours. I hope your mother heals quickly. It is strange to hear that your winter is so harsh. Ours is the warmest there has ever been. January and rain! Never heard of that before in our part of the world.

Travel capsule is a goo goal. I am not good at those. Have trouble with commitment --- to which shoes or jacket. Narrowing down my colors is helping.

And may I go slightly OT to compliment your decision to come up with a pared-down capsule to take with you on the train. I take trains a lot and I can tell you, there's nothing worse than watching people struggling with gigantic suitcases on Amtrak. Apparently most people have no idea that on the train, you're actually responsible for your own bags from start to finish, and a bag you can't personally lift is a disaster.

You look so nice! The proportions of skirt length and knee-high boots look perfect...the first thing I noticed as I struggle with this. Black and white is so classic, elegant, and edgy at the same time...one of my favorite combinations and so fool-proof.

As you already surely know, I adore the look of this pencil! New boots look really good, noticed they have a strech in the back sides, have to be comfy! Seen some similar boots here too, and loved them but my old pair are still going strong and cannot justify another pair.

Oh, I absolutely adore this outfit on you Beth Ann!

Also love to see that somebody knows what Epiphany is. My family ALWAYS kept the Christmas decorations up until Epiphany. My father once wrote to the local paper's editorial column that "My true love had barely given me five golden rings before xx recycling was hammering at my door trying to take my tree away". It is (was) also my birthday

Thanks for the encouragement! I've enjoyed my holiday capsule and need a boost to get going on fab looks for frozen days!

Ingunn: We have had a couple of very mild winters in a row, so this return to the winters of my childhood (there were record blizzards in the late 70's) is particularly jarring. Temps will moderate in a couple of days, at least for a while!

Mandipa: These boots are from Dana Buchman's line for Kohls. I just checked their website (which someone should redesign) and they've sold out. I like the quilted heels and the elastic gussets which are done very well.

Unfrumped: I am not one to "pare down" anything. I have a small, but very deep suitcase that I pack til it's filled -- and it has a gusset zipper! I'm trying to use a duffel for this trip. I'll be at the hospital and then at my mom's house most of the time, so it's a great chance to experiment with a casual, modular capsule. Never to late to learn!

April: Leaving from Union Station in Chicago I've experienced travelers with mountainous bags! Yikes! I'll have my computer bag, too, so it's just a fancy duffle for me!

Packing tonight, and trying to edit to fit cold weather clothing into my small bag!

Pil: I'm actually going to ride down with my brother, who also lives near me. My DD and I with return on Amtrak, and then take the Metra train back to the 'burbs." Fortunately, we don't have to change stations or anything like that!

So sorry for your mother. I am getting over a herniated disc...seriously painful stuff. I hope she does well. I was not a surgery candidate but I had times I wished I was, just so they could do something.

I'm late to comment on the packing issues, but you have one clever strategy and it illustrates just how many additional things must be factored n the travel capsule, like travelling by train, wit or without changes.
Btw, you look spectacular, every single bit of this outfit is gorgeous. And your writing is so entertaining and fun.

I think this is my favorite that you have posted so far. That skirt is gorgeous, and those boots. OH THOSE BOOTS! I love the back detail.

We've had the same awful winter temps (-15 earlier this week), but unlike many other areas, no school closings for us - they think we're used to it. I'll never get used to it!
