The summer season is going to be over for us soon (making me sad...) and I am wondering about what to do with well-loved (read: worn out, faded etc.) clothing. My normal end-of-season behavior was to shove everything that is not going to be worn in the fall in storage bags/boxes and forget about it until spring. But now I am wondering whether it might be good to discard certain items now to make life easier in the spring.
Thing is, I am never sure when to throw things out if I still like the style and they are not falling apart. For example, I have a cotton-blend skirt that looks somewhat faded after a few washes. I bought it this spring, wore it this summer, and the CPW is down to about $3. I could wear it again next year but I know that the dark navy color looks just a bit faded now. So, what do I do?
Do you have a hard-and-fast rule for things like this (i.e., if it's the end of season, and the item has only a few "wears" left in it, throw it out)? Or are you like me and hold on to things for a long time?
I find it easier to donate ill-fitting items, even if they look brand-new, than to discard a slightly worn-out piece. Part of it is that I don't know whether anyone around me will actually notice that the colors are not as fresh or there is a bit of pilling on knits.
