Emmanuelle Alt: Why Her Style Inspires Me

It's minimal and simple. It's as masculine as it is feminine. It's virtually jewelry-free. It mixes up the classics with a good dose of modern. My best! Her outfits always highlight her best features - her cheekbones and large eyes - allowing HER to shine. She wears minimal make-up. Her style is eye catching in an understated way - this is hard to achieve.

She also wears a lot of black - not my favourite day in day out, and no brights or pattern mixing - which I love to wear. I wouldn't wear the layering tees either, nor could I do the heel heights. But her looks are always inspiring to me.

Lastly, I LOVE how she holds her own in a sea of dramatic and over the top dressers like Anna dello Russo and Mochi's style crush Giovanna Bataglia. This really impresses me.

I am very drawn toward this minimalist look -- spare use of accessories, simple color palette, little or no patterns. Thanks for the inspiration photos Angie! This is a style direction I'd like to work toward.

bj1111, I love Anna Wintour's style too - although not one I could easily wear. It's too ornate - although I admire it for sure!

Cathy, you surprised me! I did not think EA would be a style inspiration to you! I had the impression that you were much more into maximal dressing with highly detailed pieces and distressed pieces - very UWP. Quite the opposite of EA actually. Am I wrong? I'm liking the idea of the next leg of your style journey

I couldn't agree more. I am a huge fan of her style which is streamlined, a little RATE, and that perfect mix of casual/polished so you could go anywhere. Here are some more photos I've collected over the past year. You can see her remixing some of the same things here (like the leopard coat.)

Oh, Denise! KILLER photos. Thanks!! Adore all the outfits. WOW. She really makes those classics work big time.

Love #3 in-particular - and #7 makes me smile. Love the trousers in #8. OH! And that navy blazer with the gold buttons. So perfect with the baggy jeans.

Heh, Angie, I think I'm a little schizophrenic fashion-wise right now. The photo I posted the other night with the Ash Bowie sneakers, that to me is the minimal style that is attracting me at the moment. Even though my magpie eye is attracted toward UWP-type, theatrical pieces, I am wearing those kinds of things less often.

I like how EA combines RATE with minimalism.

My thought as I looked at Angie's posting is that EA looks like a woman who could do something "real" if she needed to, as opposed to many of the fashionistas whom I couldn't imagine going on a hike or living in a rural area with nature. It's probably the lack of obvious makeup. Anyway she's gorgeous, and she certainly wears clothes well.

Angie EA is one of my style icons too! I have been pouring over her outfit photos a lot recently:). For all the reasons you mention her style totally resonates with me. And I love that she wears her favorites over and over - no fear of being seen in the same thing twice:). She looks "real" and is quite possibly the epitome of cool! Funny Angie, I was going to do a post on my admiration for her but you beat me to it lol. Great minds think a like :). Anna Wintour is another of my style icons as is the very fab Angie Cox!

How strange! I was checking some of her photos just the other day and it really struck me how her style is so purified. No dresses, no jewelry, yet she's unmistakably a woman. It really made me stop and think.

It would be difficult NOT to highlight those amazing cheekbones!! She's got quite a headstart in that department.

I like the simplicity, and I notice that she is very fond of jackets. One of those motos looks a lot like the Zara one I am sadly returning.

I think my favourite of all is Denise's 10. To be able to wear the classics like that!

Very interesting when you look at these all together. I find elements of my style here (leopard jacket looks?? Navy blazer - preppy items mixed with her French style and RATE look) even though I am not minimalist or stick thin or very Parisian. I think the simple mixing of classic items allows each of us to see the parts we admire.

I love her style also, apart from the heels her style looks as practical as it is luxurious. I also admire how her style and figure are 100% compatible.

And she also seems to love black pointy footwear. She likes to play up her legs a lot, without ever showing skin. She does have a very typical Mediterranean body type and style.

My favourite on her is from Angie's selection, pic 5. I WANT those leather pants!

And from Coco's selection, first outfit! Also: look at #4, what a strange photo! The woman she's with literally looks like an ostrich caught in headlights. While Emmanuelle poses confidently with attitude, the other one seems completely out of her comfort zone. So strange!

Krish the other woman in Denise's #4 is Carine Roitfeld, former editor of French Vogue.
She is another woman with a very distinct style signature:)

She has been one of my style icons too. I was curious if her replacement of Carine Roitfeld would change her style- if she'd go flashier or more fashionista. It seems like she has stayed very steady in her minimalist chic look, which makes sense. It works so well, why change it? She makes me see the need for good long jackets and great shoes.

I find French hair interesting- so often it looks as if they don't 'do' anything. Just wash and go. I love this, I think it's part of their appeal, but I wonder if an editor could get away with the same thing here in the US.

I think the influences are not always obvious, and also, you can absolutely love something that wouldn't work for you. Sometimes having that contrast and analyzing why it's great for one person and not for someone else is really helpful. And lastly, it's just fun to see great style. Although I'm fascinated with Giovanna's deliberate style, I'm about to post some looks that veer much more toward minimalism, and which are so gorgeous in their own deceptively simple way.

I really love what I'm seeing here too.

What I find most interesting about her style is the way she practically wears a uniform but the details are always cutting edge, so maybe she always wears a jacket/blazer with trousers but it is THE shape of the season. I find this both inspiring and discouraging because on the one hand the consistency speaks to me--she knows what she likes, what suits her, and sticks to it, but on the other hand she is always refreshed in a way that most of us could not afford to keep up with. In any case I always love seeing her photos. She truly stands out in a crowd even while being much more understated. Do you think that just comes from inside? Or is it the model good looks?
