Wow. My heart goes out to her, but I also salute her for a very well-written and articulated letter. I really admire her ability to make this decision and to ask her customers and readers of the letter to hold back any well-meaning advice they may have. It takes courage to stake your place in the sand, and I love how she's done it. I have been an admirer of her brand for a few years and would love to have owned a piece or two. It's always been just *that* much out of reach financially, but maybe the resale market will be where I can find some of her pieces.

Lisa, her business has been so consciously thought-out from the start that I'm sure they've considered every option. Well-meaning people can be exhausting when you've already been over it all. Definitely have to hand it to her for being direct and clear about why the decision had to be made and firm about it not being done on a whim.

Sal, meanwhile sweatshops in Bangladesh are opening to fulfill fast fashion orders. I am sad and angry and I-don't-even-know-what-else.

I was devastated when I read this. I have always wanted to buy something from her but could never decide what piece. I like what she stands for and I like her even more now. Her letter was so well written.
I will look at what she has for sale. Maybe I can find something.

Style Fan, I bought a dress I probably would have waffled over for another year. I'm sure I'll love it and wear it constantly.

Jenn, this is so sad. I love the dress you bought. It reminds me very much of a black EF dress I have that can be dressed up or down. Your obi type belt is a good way to give a dress a new look. Let us know when she opens her online shop. For some reason I thought I was sized out of her clothes ( too big on me.)

Joy, the online shop is open until the end of the week, I think, and then will be closed until fall, when the range will, I'm sure, be very, very limited. I don't think you'd be sized out. Her size range is extensive, from XXS to 3XL.

(ETA: I just checked and...maybe they've reached capacity? Most items seem to say "returning this fall" now.)

nemosmom, it's worrisome on so many levels. I live in a theatre district and almost every theatre in the area is in danger of shutting down permanently. It could change our neighborhood forever.

Angie, I am glad too. Black dresses are becoming my uniform, but I enjoy having a collection of lovely ones in beautiful fabrics of different weights and cuts.

The mayor here just said that he expects the first lightening of restrictions to be in 2-6 weeks. It'll be my ray of hope present to myself.

I think WA is sheltering for another month. Our Stay At Home Order has not been lifted - for I think - most of May. But certain construction jobs can proceed on May 4th, and some recreational outdoor parks will open with restrictions too. Seattle is re-opening VERY slowly.

Wow, what a thoughtful and responsible letter. I had also read that some sweatshops in Bangladesh are opening while the rest of the country is on lock down. Something is terribly wrong, but I hope ES can regroup in the future.

So sad, but a beautifully written letter, and I’m truly amazed at her resiliency with the plans for the fall. I’ll be savoring the dress I ordered in March all the more, when it arrives. And would definitely order a pattern/kit to make my own in the future, if that’s still part of her new direction.

Jenn, so glad you have another dress to look forward to. The loss of wonderful businesses like this is devastating. I read the letter and was blown away at how passionate ES is for her business and how ethical to fulfill orders to customers, pay employees fairly and minimize financial loss to her creditors. I feel that she was ahead of her time. Covid is making us value local production and ethical work practices - preferring to buy less but buy better.

So sad, but I think she is making the right decision. It's such a difficult time for small businesses and their employees. I am excited to see what unfolds for Liz in the future; I'm sure we'll see her designs again. She's incredibly savvy and I love her transparency. For folks who are interested in secondhand, most of the action is @selltradeslowfashion on Instagram.
