elbow sleeve suit jackets? - YouLookFab Forum

Does a bracelet sleeve immediately take down the formality of a business suit? I've been shopping around for business suits (that I could also wear as separates, of course) given that I didn't own anything of the sort and will likely have interviews coming up in the near future. Ann Taylor suits looked too dowdy on me, Banana Republic only seemed to have things in black right now (I prefer charcoal) and the material seems a bit underwhelming for the cost, and I had issues with getting things at Express, too. So I finally ordered this suit from jcrew: http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../64605.jsp in the heather flannel, and really like the way it fits on me, and kept it. It was by far the best suit jacket that I tried, and I also bought the matching skirt. Is there any reason to be concerned that the sleeve length makes it too casual? I have fairly long arms for my height, so the sleeve actually ends at the same point or maybe even a little closer to the elbow than on the model.

FWIW, I don't think I'll be interviewing in any sort of very formal industry, but it would be nice to have confirmation that this kind of suit would be versatile.

I do think a shorter sleeve makes it look less formal (going by what you linked) but I also think it's appropriate for summer dressing... so I don't think it's "too casual" as long as you're not interviewing in a formal industry (such as finance).

I love it! I think it should be fine for all but the most formal business setting.

I think it'd be fine. It would look cute if you scrunched or rolled the sleeves up a bit as well.

It's lovely. The thing is, it is summery with sleeves this length. If you are interviewing in the warmer months I should think it would be just fine. But in the winter it might be tricky.

The fabric and tailoring look very nice. I understand your frustration with the hunt for the right suit, especially when avoiding black. I agree that this look is a bit summery, as well as either trendy or a fad perhaps (finer minds than mine would know better). If you need this jacket to be a classic, multi-season workhorse with style longevity, standard sleeve length may be give you more options (sleeves can always be scrunched).

This would work in many settings as is, just depends on your priorities. If you can use this now, while seeing if you will need a winter version, you may find more long sleeve options as fall jackets appear. If you truly want one blazer to do it all, I'd hang onto this one (tags on) and keep looking. Then if you decide you like it best, you can wear it to the interview.

Good luck. Maybe others here will have suggestions for jackets cut similarly to jcrew brand.

thanks for the all the feedback, everyone. Since I liked the fit so much, I did already cut off the tags. I would have preferred to buy something more all-year-round but this was the best fit and color of anything I tried and I was impatient. I'm giving some talks in East Asia in August so I will definitely have a chance to wear this suit, as Japan/Korea are more formal environments than the US (usually I wouldn't wear a full suit to a science presentation), but it's also the height of summer so I think shorter sleeves should be OK.
