Elbow patches are totally going to be my next DIY

Love this (basics that are not basic! ehh? eeehhhh?): http://us.asos.com/ASOS-ASOS-S.....XMvUHJvZC8.

I think it should be pretty easy to do without much cost. I printed out a star stencil online, pick up a tiny bit of fabric and sew on garment using the button hole stitch on my machine? Any sewing experts out there feel free to offer tips and advice!

I splurged on a charcoal Smythe riding jacket with bright chestnut elbow patches and I LOVE IT. It's so beautifully made I almost wept when I tried it on.

As for the stars, they look cute but tricky to sew - but I am not a sewer.

Great idea! The only tip I have is to try it on a scrap of a similar fabric first, so you can get your stitch settings right before you work on your shirt. If it's a soft knit, it might help to put a stabilizer on the fabric before you sew? You could possibly iron freezer paper on to the back of the sleeve (inside, that is) and it can be torn away after sewing is finished.

or use a light weight heat'n'bond to iron the patch on before stitching?

What cjh said. Stars would be a big challenge, but if you practice first and take your time and get your satin stitch set and your patch stabilized you should be able to do it.
I have always had a soft spot for elbow patches, but never owned anything. I'm considering this as it's pretty subtle

Oooh! I dig the LL Bean jacket. Fortunately for my wallet they don't make it in my size, but that's the kind of thing I think I should be looking out for.

Man, I really need to learn to sew. My shopping life would be so much easier if I could make exactly what I want instead of vainly hoping that someone else will have the same ideas.
