I was so happy to find these EF Milo oxfords recently as they are super cute, ticked off a lot of boxes for me, and were quite comfortable testing them out in the store:

However on first real-life test, they aren't working. At all.
There's this elastic band across the top of the foot underneath the tongue, and I believe the problem is it's just too tight. Tight enough that after an hour or so *just sitting* it feels like my toes are going numb.
Meanwhile there does seem to be a lot of room for my toes in the toe box area -- so this is not an issue of needing a wide. The shoe fits overall -- except for this dang elastic band, which is cutting off circulation because my foot is high volume.
The shoes hurt nowhere else. My toes and forefoot are just going completely numb! Not while walking. While *sitting.* This is after loosening up the laces -- it's not that they are tied too tight. It's this stupid elastic band. When I bought these it was late in the day, I'd been walking a lot, my feet were as wide as they were going to be, and yet, I didn't notice this. Imagine if someone put a 1-inch too-tight rubber band around your foot at where your top sneaker laces sit.
Since it's elastic I don't think the shoe stretcher will do anything, nor do I think wearing them in will do anything. So I am thinking about performing surgery and cutting off the elastic band.
Do I dare? Do I do it myself, take it to a tailor? These were pricey. I got them from the EF store, not from Nordstrom's, so I don't know about returns as I've already worn them out. I would love to get them to work, as they are otherwise perfect, the leather is lovely, I like the cute stitching, they don't make my feet look enormous, etc.
What do you think? Risk it? Has anyone else done this?
Why oh why, Eileen? Why?
