What trends or pieces have you stated that you don't like and had to "eat your words" or backtrack when you found yourself doing that very thing.

I think we will all have at least one.

For me (this is only the current ones, there have been many in the past):
- shades of purple - swore off it - now these are two of my favourite pieces of gear
- denim jacket - love my version
- tucking tops - hated it, but do it all the time now
- sneakers with midi dresses (I was all into the mid heel in the past, but I do wear midi's frequently with a sneaker)

Yes. I have done this with burgundy. A desire for velvet, not black velvet, sucked me in. Now I have a small dressy holiday capsule.

Decided to purge all black from my wardrobe. Later realized black is so useful for hiding sweat in summer.

Hahaha. Great title!

I have done this in two different ways:

1. Things I thought I didn’t wear, but discovered, on closer inspection of my wardrobe & dressing habits, that I do wear. Chief among these is probably black. I am sure there are other times I sounded like a hypocrite, if one compares my words and actions.

2. Changing what I wear. Far and away the biggest change is leaning into a more feminine style. For years, I scarcely wore pink at all. Ditsy florals (other than maternity dresses) were also very rare for me; the one skirt I can recall was worn with a low-back bodysuit and “big” sneakers. Now I wear that skirt with light-colored tops, including pink, and my little white sandals; ditzy is practically signature for me. Pink & pastels are suddenly a big part of my closet. I’m not sure what’s happening here, but think I’m going to continue to explore this direction for a while.

Bonus round: this isn’t something I said I never do, but I certainly never expected myself to enjoy putting together complicated outfits like these. I want to do more. I’ve been thinking about my winter style; quirky, complicated feminine outfits like these (but warmer!) might become a big part of it.

I bought a couple turtlenecks and button ups last year, both of which I had said no to. TBH not 100% on the button ups, for many reasons, but the turtlenecks are much less uncomfortable than I remembered.
Meanwhile, my lower and wider necklines have definitely fallen out of favor, particularly in summer.

Flats- definitely wearing them more now than I used to. My Birks (the gold ones especially), formerly mostly used just for hiking and post gym are worn more than any other shoes these days. For cold weather I bought loafers last year, but not 100% on them either.

The list of things I'm now "off" is ever growing though!

Good question! When I was young I remember viewing pointed toe shoes as too fussy or contrived or something. Then suddenly I didn't. The rest of history.

I don't know that I can think of anything. On the one hand, I think of clothing as pieces or ideas. I'm excited by new ideas. On the other hand, there's a certain emphatic element to my style and I won't wear pieces that disavow each other. You're never going to see me in a pretty floral dress paired with stompy combat boots. I'll just let the prettiness shine out. The closest I would get would be a Picnic At Hanging Rock look and that's just plain too costumey since we have so many other shoe styles available to us. I would, though, wear a pretty old-timey floral or plaid dress with cowboy boots since I tend to categorize this as Schoolmarm On Her Day Off.

Oh, I thought of one. Graphic tees. I'm generally not a tee person, unless they're more like a firm tank. But recently went to a sale at a local church thrift and there were boxes of tees and tops, buy one for a dollar and second one free. I poked through and was smitten by two touristy tees. I love touristy stuff, love cityscape stuff. These were both stylized mashups of Chicago themes. The word Chicago is glittery. One in pastels and one in darker moodier colors. Loved them. Would wear all the cities they got that I could find.

Linen. I used to be annoyed by the wrinkles. Now that I've discovered how comfortable linen is in summer, I don't even see the wrinkles anymore.

Yes, have those
1. Sneakers. Before 2017 I had one pair to wear on such rare occasions like hiking. Remember trying white Adidas and saying “not now, not ever”. Later bought one white, one black and one hybrid with oxfords. Last year decided that I would rather wear loafers but my feet refused to cooperate. I’m updating my sneakers this year.

2. Converse shoes. Thought they would look too big on my feet. My first pair is black, leather, high tops purchased for wearing in fall/winter months on my daily walks. Now have 4 pairs, including the only pair of off white winter shoes.

I have to say that I loved sneakers and Converse shoes on others and my reservations were due to concerns that my feet will look too big, too long and flat in proportions to my petite self. Comes mostly from childhood and I’m aware that I should stop caring about such nonsense. I have a new pair of chunky, flat shoes that I love but undecided about …. because I never wear chunky shoes

The color green. Used to say I never wear it. Then I got some camo and some olive pants. Then than lead to to sage green…

I used to think semi-tucking was ridiculous, a totally contrived look for fashion shoots. Now I'm one of the semi-tuck's biggest proponents, and I'm aware I probably look ridiculous and totally contrived to some onlookers.

16 years ago, I never thought I would wear skinnies again - and of course, I did. I haven't worn them for 5 years, but who knows! I might wear them again in ten years.

I never thought I would wear harem pants - but got a dressy pair and loved them!

I was the anti-corduroy-pant-person - and now I have two pairs that I thoroughly enjoy.

Never thought I would wear fashion sneakers while working with clients. (Except for at the NAS). And last year I started doing that outside of the NAS.

Oh, I was never going to wear sneakers with regular clothes, ever. Especially not dresses and midi skirts. But now? Umm, quite a lot.

I think it exceedingly unlikely that I will ever wear a micro mini since I've never worn one so far and have no yen for one -- but who can say for certain?

Skinny jeans. I was appalled when I first saw them but finally as a very late adopter I realized how well they worked for me.

Last winter got a pair of relaxed boot-cut-ish jeans and wore them fairly frequently. Then I wore a pair of narrow straight legs and was asked by a close friend if I'd lost weight. (Nope.) It did give me furiously to think, as Poirot would say.

I swore I would never wear a romper because I didn't want to look like I was wearing a onesie. HAH! I found one that doesn't look juvenile and I wear it quite frequently. I tried on one sweatshirt dress in a store and said "Nope and not for me." I went to a consignment store and found an Athleta sweatshirt dress, tried it, loved it and bought it. I saved some money too.

Haha Jessikams - I did a similar thing with black. Tried to replace with navy but leaning back to black - and I also prefer it in summer!!

StagF - I think that's all very understandable. And I think as we move through life that different things can feel right. I agree - go with it.

Suntiger - I remember the turtlenecks last year!! Pleased you are enjoying them.

Haha Jaime - I can relate to that.

Staysfit - haha! It was hard to avoid them for a few years wasn't it - and I think our eye can adjust to not thinking they are just too short...

Haha Rachy - I think your balloon jeans are out there.

Vildy - I loved that film and have visited Hanging Rock. It was not as atmospheric as I thought it might have been. And yes sometimes it just take the right one to feel that a piece does work for you.

Helena - I think young people (maybe not now but certainly me) would put up with discomfort for fashion. I think of silly heels and cold mini dresses in winter and uncomfortable body suits etc....

Christel - linen is just the best in summer! And making peace with the wrinkles is important.

Irina - I am pleased that you like the sneakers and converse as well since they have been essential recently. Those perceptions of our self can be powerful. For me I thought tucking tops would make me look too short waisted..... and it can do.......but it also can look really good.

kkards - haha! Keep rocking the green. Before you know it you'll be in a lime green jumpsuit.

Sharan - funny!! Keep semi tucking and you will convert them.

Angie - yes we keep on changing don't we. Your cords and sneakers are wonderful. And pants shapes seem to be the most distinctive thing to date an era (flares in the 70s, baggy acidwash and skinny in the 80s, straight in the 90s, bootcuts, then skinnies etc..) I think we do end up adapting.

Suz - I think so many of us have adapted to sneakers with almost everything. And who knows about a micro mini in the future.

Ginger - I don't often wear skinnies but I have some ponte pants that I love - they are flattering and they tuck into boots. And I think they are a great contrast to your full skirts and dresses that are signature to your style.

nuancedream - haha! I have been considering a romper too.... it only takes finding the right one.

I said no mint and no overalls. I actually have a mint/light aqua top. I nearly donated it, but instead wore it a week ago. And I was looking at overalls the other day. That’s an example of insanity - expecting a different outcome, expecting it to not look horrible!

I guess with changes it is reading whether you are being influenced or whether it really is a change.

I was never going to wear floral dresses after my boyfriend said I looked like a Grandma in the 90's (I thought I looked like the girls on Melrose Place)
I was never going to wear forest green after having a school uniform in that colour
I was never going to wear high waisted jeans again and laughed at Kath Day Knight with her super high waisted jeans in the early 2000's (Kath and Kim, Australian TV comedy reference here).

I am sure there are more examples!

We re-watched an episode of Kath and Kim recently and some aspects haven't aged well, but I loved her relationship with Kel..........

I suspect you looked more like Alison on Melrose Place (or Jane?) than Kath Day Knight!!

And the school uniform does bring up such strong feelings.....

I think as a curvy gal I was sceptical of tiered skirts in the beginning. But then I bought this Basque one and it became an instant workhorse. Which led to me adding more of them (admittedly not quite as good as the original, but I do like the shape and length for Summer). I’ve figured out that what I really like about the Basque one is that it sits flat on my hips. Sometimes embracing a trend is all about figuring out how to tweak it for your own preferences.

And I remember Angie having some strong views about maxi skirts

Brooklyn, you're right! I still don't wear maxi dresses and skirts by choice. I am firmly on Team Midaxi with you! But one of my favourite dresses grew to maxi length after laundering, and I cannot bare parting with it. Cannot be shortened either. So I wear it......

I’m wearing the mint top again today. It was described as light turquoise. It’s not my favorite, but it’s okay for wearing around the house. Anyway it looks fine with tan shorts.
